California Mileage Tax Would Charge Drivers Based on Distance Driven

Sick of the gas tax?

What about a tax on every mile you drive?

A new bill going through Sacramento would tax drivers for every mile they are on the road.

The state gasoline tax of 52.9 cents per gallon could be replaced with a "miles driven fee" of $0.05 cents or so per mile driven, under state legislation proposed by a Bay Area lawmaker.

State transit officials note that there's not nearly enough money available to fix the many bridges and roads in California that are in desperate need of repair.

A federal highway fund, based on taxes on fuel, is expected to run dry this summer.

“We've got to figure out how to pay for infrastructure,” state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) said. “One philosophy is, if you use it, you should pay for it.”

Under SB 1077, introduced by DeSaulnier, a still-to-be-determined California city would begin taxing motorists in January 2016. The longer your commute, the more you would pay.

That may yet be a tough sell, but a $0.05 per mile fee could raise over $100 billion for roads in some parts of the state, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

That would certainly slow down the commuting paradigm.

[Art.] State transit officials note that there's not nearly enough money available to fix the many bridges and roads in California that are in desperate need of repair. A federal highway fund, based on taxes on fuel, is expected to run dry this summer.

In fact I have heard repeatedly that CA pulls money out of the gas taxes to pay for many special interest projects that are suppose to be paid for out of the general funds.

All the States are doing this, and so is the Congress, robbing out the road funds for vote-buying, ribbon-cutting goodies.

No discussion of any measure like this without a complete audit of federal and state road and maintenance funds, gas taxes, and appropriations.

Anyone tries to slide one through at 2 a.m. -- hang him!

The ultimate goal is to RFID every car, every person in America, and use the information to screw you hard.

Friend had a lease truck, he pulled a fuse and odometer didn’t work anymore. Neither did a bunch of other dash information but he got by just fine.

There will never be enough money for corrupt states and municipalities.

Exactly!

It is a bit like the person who wins $100 million in the lottery--and then is broke again within 10 years (or even less): No amount of money would have been "enough" if he did not know how to manage it properly.

“Enjoy the Marxism you voted for Californians! Don’t leave because of it. You voted for it now reap the consequences.”

Hear, hear! However, they are not suffering the consequences because they, are running to other states and doing the same thing they did to their own state. A true beast of burden, they are.

You would think clean air, great vistas and such would lead to say, rational thought...instead, collectivist IQs in Kalifornia are likely lower as a bunch rather than individually...never have I seen a state full of so many book-smart idiots.

LOL. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I see quotes like that. Politicians NEVER dedicate transportation taxes to infrastructure. Just like with the gas tax, they build up a pile of money and then can't keep their grubby hands off of it and it goes into the general account.

The “highway” fund may be broke but look at all the great bicycle paths, public art and mass transit that those funds have provided.
