On May 7th New Hampshire Representative Timothy Horrigan (D-Durham) stood on the state house floor and argued against legislation forbidding the use of EBT cards for guns, saying such a ban "is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment."

The legislation--SB203--says:

Any person who receives public assistance is prohibited from using an EBT card or cash obtained with an EBT card to gamble or to purchase tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, lottery tickets, firearms, or adult entertainment.

I got a simple solution. I will refrain from comment, however, to avoid the zot.

My gun has provided me with a heck of a lot of food in the past when I had no money to purchase food....

I joke now when someone orders pheasant at a restaurant... I have a hard time eating pheasant as I associate the taste with biting on lead shot!

How about we stop the whole EBT thing, completely? Go back to food depots for the needy, and run them locally.

Stop giving these people money (in any form), and you immediately remove the need for this type of legislation, and you don’t waste time debating the (dubious) merits of the rule(s).

I missed reading the part of the US Constitution that specifies the right to an EBT card (and free stuff.)

I wish I could get some of that free money with no strings attached!

An EBT Card is not a “Food Stamp” Card. Its an Electronic Benefits Card.

You are thinking about the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Card.

The SNAP card can only purchase approved food items.

The EBT (Welfare) card used to be able to be used anywhere but after abuses States are adding restrictions to their use - like in the case of this story.

He's an anti-Second Amendment moonbat who thinks he's cleverly busting conservative chops. Just another lefty relic trying to be oh-so-hip. What a tool.

You make far too much sense.

I would go further. Such depots would distribute basic foodstuffs: flour, sugar, cornmeal, salt, canned goods including meat and fish, fresh vegetables, pasta, TVP, powdered eggs and milk. Absolutely no convenience foods.

Of course there would be some problems. Give most EBT recipients a bag of flour, and a packet of yeast and tell them "Here is your loaf of bread" and they would look at you like you were insane. They would not be able to turn these basics into food.

Half the Walmart's and fast food joints would shut down.

"My gun has provided me with a heck of a lot of food in the past when I had no money to purchase food...."

Where I grew up in Western PA, schools were closed on opening day of deer season, and a teenager (with a valid hunting license) could be excused from up to three days of school during deer season. Many families in the area viewed their deer tags as a sort of food stamp and counted on hunting to supplement their grocery budget. While I'm opposed to the concept of EBT in general and certainly for the purchase of firearms, as long as the program is what it is, I'd be willing to compromise and allow EBT benefits to be used for the purchase of a hunting license...at least that way you know the recipients are willing to do at least some work for some of their food and in fact, are performing a service in the management of wildlife.

Wow

I don’t need some thug robbing me with a gun he bought with an EBT card. No.

While I strongly believe in the right to bear arms, taxpayers should not be footing the bill tor this nonsense. I had to look at the headline again to see if this was a John Semmens article...

The DNC couldn’t have that. Working hard for a living would convert the into middle class Republicans ith conservative values and “homey can’t have ‘dat”...

I believe there has been a vast conspiracy to withhold that portion of the Constitution and all of my teachers were in on it.

I’ve eaten pheasant and other little beasties in many an English restaurant - and almost lost fillings and teeth because of lead. It’s the price you pay for fresh-killed food!

Could this be a backdoor way to increase the number of folk in Obama’s ‘Domestic Security Force’. Think about it ... with a weapon the LIVs can augment their income (holdups, robberies, etc), and be ready for when Zero calls for his ‘revolution’ (attack ‘whitey’). All this with a tool paid for by us taxpayers.
