On May 7th New Hampshire Representative Timothy Horrigan (D-Durham) stood on the state house floor and argued against legislation forbidding the use of EBT cards for guns, saying such a ban "is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment."

I missed reading the part of the US Constitution that specifies the right to an EBT card (and free stuff.)

It's right under the part that gives people the right to kill babies that they don't want.

Hunting licenses already passed out free to the takers. Fishing too. Yeah it’s a good thing for them who got time on their hand... not!

It’s Alisnsky tactic - made your opponent live up to his ideals. I assume that is the case that it is a set-up to show GOP hypocrisy or something.

Hunting and fishing licenses for free is a sore point. It used to be when you reached 65 you could get a free fishing license. On my 65th birthday I trotted myself over to get my fishing license only to find out that only 6 months before they moved the age requirement to 70. When I reach 70 I’ll probably find out that it got moved again to 75.

guns are to protect those without food stamps from those with food stamps after they run out of food stamps.

I thought EBT was the new Food Stamps.

Will it gradually be nmorphed by the government into a “salary” instead of just a handout intended for food?

Thanks for the insight. I don’t know of this politico.

Seems to me....that if you need a gun....get a job and earn it.

And that same rep would stand there if voter id was coming up and say it was impossible for those very same people to get an id.

The Constitution formed a government of very carefully crafted checks and balances and the concept of powers limited only to those enumerated. If the preamble had force of law the rest of the Constitution may as well have not been written as any power imaginable could be justified.

I like the poor farm concept, give aid to the needy but only if they are willing to move to the poor farm where they will live in spartan accomodations with just the bare necessities of food, clothing, shelter and clean water. Those who are able should work for their keep. In other words let them live as those of us who were born on the farm as I was used to live, working for their keep from the age they are first able to do some small chore. Those who are able to learn should have the opportunity to learn a trade to give them a way to leave the farm and be independent. Of course, this idea is so old and so sensible that it will never be considered.

-- While I strongly believe in the right to bear arms, taxpayers should not be footing the bill tor this nonsense. --

There was a bill in one of the first sessions of Congress, in the 1790's, that would fund the purchase of a firearm for every able-bodied adult male who could not afford one or who did not have one. IIRC, it didn't pass, with reasons being not enough funds, and also that the "owners" would not give a "free" rifle the sort of care they would give one that they had to purchase.

It may be a lefty trying to confound the right, but I’d say that the best reply is to agree. After all, it gives people “dignity” to decide for themselves how to spend handouts.

But I’d suggest that we don’t buy kitchen appliances with EBT money, we buy the consumables. So we shouldn’t buy guns, we should let them buy AMMO!

I teach at our local high school. I have a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker in my room. My fridge is stocked with my convenience foods: apples, cheese, peanut butter, yogurt, half and half, water, etc. One morning I was rushed and had no leftovers for lunch. I snagged a potato from my pantry and grabbed the container of sour cream and the bag of shredded cheddar from our fridge. I nuked the potato near the end of class as it needs to carry-over cook after the microwave shuts off. My students’ mouths were watering. They had no idea that this was possible. I immediately asked for a show of hands on who could scramble an egg. Three out of 17 students raised their hands. Sad.

"How about we stop the whole EBT thing, completely? Go back to food depots for the needy, and run them locally."

Good suggestion, but it won't happen unless you can give members of Congress step by step directions on how they can skim more money using your plan than they are now using the EBT card plan.

That's exactly what it is. Just like the Dem legislator trying to re-enact the draft to try to thwart Bush.

And the best reply IS to agree with him. It will shut him down.

Sad or pathetic?

My epiphany came watching Jamie Oliver. He was on a mission, as usual, to bring cooking skills to those who lived on fast food and convenience food in a British city. Some of his students didn't know how to boil water. Some didn't know what boiling water looked like.

I don't know what subject you teach. A five minute segment at the end of class on life skills might be useful for your students.

Hey Harrigan... why not get a law pass to let EBT to be used for a Caribbean vacation.
