California Wins Chief Executive.Net's Worst State For Business

Texas continued its 10-year reign as the best state overall--but Florida, which ranks No. 2, is edging up and even overtaking Texas in its quality of living environment. Florida Governor Rick Scott told Chief Executive: “We’ve learned from Texas how to tell our story better and it helps that we’ve cut taxes 25 times--about $400 million.”

Louisiana was called the Cinderella state by Chief Executive for jumping “31 positions from 40th in 2010 to No. 9 this year.” CEOs credited the state for making a “concerted effort to transform old habits and policies.” Wisconsin was also recognized for Governor Scott Walker having survived a bitter recall election and still being able to guide the state from “41st five years ago to 14th in 2014.”

The Economist magazine reported that it takes two years to open a new restaurant in the California, compared to six to eight weeks in Texas. That is why CKE Restaurants (owner of Carl’s Jr.) moved from Carpinteria, California and is committed to opening 300 restaurants in Texas, but has no plans for new restaurants in California.

The most interesting comment in the ChiefExecutive.net report came from Richard Fisher, CEO of the Dallas Federal Reserve: “California likes to say that Texas can have all those low-wage jobs, but from 2000 to 2012, job growth percentage change by wage quartile was better in Texas.”

A long term consequence of Katrina and the demise of New Orleans as a political force.

Now if only we could get a hurricane to hit Chicago.

Worst state in the worst country for a new business.

I bet San Jose could qualify for worst city in the worst state in the worst country.

Krispy Kreme wanted to do a coördinated double opening in San Jose and Mountain View.

The Mountain View store has been open for several years, the San Jose store still hasn’t been approved...

WOW! Government at all levels is totally out of control.

The parasite class in government is dominated by sadistic people who wake up each day relishing making our lives miserable.

Remenber the BTK serial killer? He took a long break from his career of Binding, Torturing, and Killing women.

Why you ask?

He got hisself a job as a building code inspector. It seems he derived enough pleasure from tormenting homeowners who wanted to add a deck or pave their driveway that he didn't feel the need to get his jollies slowly murdering helpless women.

True story.

*sigh*

Now that you brought it up, I remember that. So true.

I know quite a few housing contractors. The stories they tell are eye-opening. I am convinced after hearing so many stories that the type of people attracted to becoming building inspectors are truly evil and sadistic.

They truly relish making people's live miserable. Our Founders would be appalled at the entire concept of "government" inspectors having to approve of such work.

I read quite a few articles on how free market mechanisms would provide superior service and accomplish the same "purpose" of quality inspections, but without the sadistic monopoly of the state.

It is a shame that the State (meaning all govts) have taken upon itself to be the "last word" on so much of our lives.

I’ll do you one back.

I built a bunch of White Castles.

They have a factory that makes all of the white porcelan panels that make the exterior veneer to the stuctures. They are only made in white in the sizes for their own buildings. It is fired porcelan.

One of the local suburbs planning commissions made national headlines by wanting to insist that White Castle make its building in “Beige” or some other artistic friendly “earth-tone.”

They became a laughing stock and after a few months gave up.
