Sudanese Woman to Be Killed for Marrying a Christian Man

A Sudanese judge on Thursday sentenced a Christian woman to hang for apostasy, despite appeals by Western embassies for compassion and respect for religious freedom.

Born to a Muslim father, the woman was convicted under the Islamic sharia law that has been in force in Sudan since 1983 and outlaws conversions on pain of death.

Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, 27, is eight months pregnant and married to a Christian national of South Sudan which broke away in 2011, human rights activists say.

"We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged," Judge Abbas Mohammed Al-Khalifa told the woman, addressing her by her father's Muslim name, Adraf Al-Hadi Mohammed Abdullah.

Khalifa also sentenced Ishaq to 100 lashes for "adultery". Under Sudan's interpretation of sharia, a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man and any such relationship is regarded as adulterous.

Ishag reacted without emotion when Abbas delivered the verdict at a court in the Khartoum district of Haj Yousef.

Earlier in the hearing, an Islamic religious leader spoke with her in the caged dock for about 30 minutes.

Then she calmly told the judge: "I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy."

Sudan has a strongly Islamist government but, other than floggings, extreme sharia law punishments have been rare.

After the hearing about 50 people demonstrated against the verdict.

"No to executing Meriam," said one of their signs while another proclaimed: "Religious rights are a constitutional right."

In a speech, one demonstrator said they would continue their protests until she is freed.

A smaller group supporting the verdict also arrived but there was no violence.

"This is a decision of the law. Why are you gathered here?" one supporter asked, prompting an activist to retort: "Why do you want to execute Meriam? Why don't you bring corruptors to the court?"

Sudan is widely perceived as one of the most graft-ridden countries in the world, ranked 174th for its performance by campaign group Transparency International. AFP

absolutely ! if any non-moslem woman is inclined to marrying a moslem man they certainly need a good talking to :^)

It’s a disaster down the line , as in this case .
It should be against the law .

I stand in awe of your utter lack of discriminating ability, not to mention your lack of imagination. Pardon my intrusion in the tiny bubble, inside of the little shell, buried in the mud on the bottom of the ocean that you call your philosophy of religion.

Here’s a daisy. If only the people of the world would hold daisies like you do, peace and happiness would fill the Earth.

Have a nice day.

I see people from all religions treat people like crap because of what they view as their faith. It’s stupid and shameful. I’d rather people just stick to “Be good to each other” and not scream hellfire and brimstone. People like that need to be ignored and kept from power as much as possible.

You can find a usive people in every religion. But speaking generally, Christianity has done more good for the world than any other religion. All religions are not the same.

Your obvious conflation of Christians and Muslims without admitting it is ugly and cowardly.

Christians will tell you you are going to hell if you don’t accept Jesus as you savior. In the mean time, Jesus tells them to treat you with love and respect, and the VAST majority of Christians to just that.

Muslims are told to KILL you for not being Muslim, and turn you into a SLAVE if you convert. And they do indeed kill and enslave people all over the world for just those reasons. And they especially murder Christians.

Christians have fought and died to protect a country where you are safe to slander their very meaning of existence.

Muslims are sneaking and infiltrating to overthrow that system into Sharia, where they can openly enslave women as property, cut out their genitals, and kill anyone who speaks against them.

You do NOT “see people from all religions treating people like crap because of their faith.” What you see is Muslims telling you and your liberal friends that they are on your side. And you are so rock stupid that you believe them - and so you lie, and lie and lie for them, against the freedoms offorded to you by your own country - and call yourself clever because you think you’re invisible.

You are not invisible.

To anybody.
