DC Schools: $29,349 Per Pupil, 83% Not Proficient in Reading

The public schools in Washington, D.C., spent $29,349 per pupil in the 2010-2011 school year, according to the latest data from National Center for Education Statistics, but in 2013 fully 83 percent of the eighth graders in these schools were not "proficient" in reading and 81 percent were not "proficient" in math.

In 2013, students nationwide took NAEP reading and math tests. When the NCES listed the scores of public-school eighth graders in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, D.C. came in last in both subjects.

D.C. eighth graders scored an average of 248 out of 500 in reading, and Mississippi finished next to last with an average of 253.

Only 17 percent of D.C. 8th graders rated "proficient" or better in reading.

The NCES database indicates that in the 2010-2011 school year, Washington, D.C. public schools spent a total of $29,349 per pupil, ranking No. 1 in spending per pupil among the 21 large cities in the TUDA.

Congress ought to give every family in Washington, D.C., a choice of whether or not they want a government school to spend this money on behalf of their children. The D.C. public school system should be required to provide every family in the district with school-age children with a voucher for each child that is worth every penny the district now spends per pupil in its public schools. Families should be able to use that voucher at any school they want, anywhere they want.

Everything you described is a real problem...in suburban white high schools.

But as to the answer to your question about how we start to address these many troubling issues, my answer is always the same with all our social problems:

Stop subsidizing them.

the next question should be:

why haven’t 82% of eighth grade teachers been fired?

additionally, immediate review of all other grades must be performed to see if the results encompass the entire student body

of course, any and all pension options for such teachers would be terminated

No matter how much money is thrown at this population, the turd remains unpolished. Big surprise.

$29,000 per student and most are not proficient in math and reading.

That’s immoral.

Obviously, funding for a study is needed, which will probably recommend that education should have more funding.

No one will discuss the obvious issues here.

“The reason is obvious. I know older black teachers who say going back to segregation is the answer. Black teachers had respect and would discipline the students.”

I believe that black AND white students need to have a big can of whup-ass opened up on them.

Actually private sector business is also done this way. No project can _ever_ actually fail, because the failing components have been “de-scoped” until “phase x” - even if the failing components comprise the bulk of the project. Then, money and resource is thrown at it until it “kinda, sorta” works well enough to fool the right people into believing that the project is a success.

No teacher is allowed to discipline a student anymore. I believe that’s why there are no good teachers. Most of them can’t speak English.

Where’s the other $600K go?

Administration. The DC public schools have 100 times as many adminstrators per-pupil as the archdiocese of Washington.

Yes. 100 times as many.

I am sure the DC school system is just a huge affirmative action jobs program. It all about gettin' paid!!!! The kids are going nowhere but the teachers and administrators are getting paid! So are the contractors service providers and janitors

Many of the teachers in the inner city schools today are coming from the same background as the students they teach. By that I mean they are deficient in most academic areas, and are affirmative action college graduates. When segregation ended there were still many older experienced, well educated teachers around, but as they have retired they have been replaced by these incompetents. The problems, therefore, with poor education have only gotten worse. The biggest problem is the destruction of the family, and until that begins to mend nothing is going to change no matter how much money is thrown into the schools.

This is a normal pattern that has been going on for decades. We have a system that is not in the game to really educate anyone but to make money and brain whqash the children.

There were lots of black students in my small southern hometown who didn’t know who their daddies were. I worked with quite a few of them. They were all hard working intelligent people. Two of them played football for Oklahoma and got degrees. They spoke of their teachers fondly and showed them the respect they deserved.

There you have it.

Those pushing for “smaller class sizes” have no interest in better education.

“Fewer students per teacher” correlates to “More teachers per student”.

And “More teachers per student” means more teachers, more Deputy Junior Assistant Vice Principals, more Junior Assistant Vice Principals, more Assistant Vice Principals, more Vice Principals, and more Principals.

In other words, more money for teacher-union members.
