Oprah sued by 86-year-old nuclear physicist who claims TV mogul is blocking public hiking trails

A man who lives near Oprah Winfrey’s new property above Telluride, Colorado, is suing her for allegedly blocking access to hiking trails open to neighbours for decades.

Retired nuclear physicist Charles D. Goodman claims Winfrey’s Yellow Brick Road company, the property’s former owners and the town of Mountain Village made a secret deal to close access to the trails that cut across the property purchased for $10.9 million in March.

“I don’t care if Oprah is a neighbor, but if she is going to cut off access to trails, I don’t find that acceptable,” Goodman said in an interview with the Denver Post.

The law in most states, and I presume in Colorado, states that if you allow public access for walkers or hikers across your land for a certain number of years—usually seven—then you cannot prevent people from continued access.

This goes back to English law. England is full of footpaths, which cannot be closed off. And American law continued that practice.

Rockefeller Center owns the road that goes through it in front of the skating rink. And once a year they close it to traffic for a day, because otherwise they would lose that property right to the road.

Exactly! Easements are a part of a properties deed and almost always are transferred to the new owner, regardless of what the sales contract said. If the property had a valid easement for public trail access, Ms. Oprah is bound to allow for said public access. The whole thing sounds like she pushed the former owners and local politicians to change the easement before the property transfer.

This would certainly be duplicitous. It is also possibly fraudulent and corrupt. Nothing Oprah would be unfamiliar with.

Is this a great country or what?
I mean where else in the world can a minority girl born in poverty become an obese, obnoxious racist and accumulate such wealth and power in the private sector?

Thanks for that info.

Old Oprah has certainly forgotten her humble origins.

I would want be the one who pisses off a nuclear physicist who doesn’t have much to lose with 86 years behind him.

Doesn’t she also have a mansion in Hawaii — where she was cutting off the public’s access?

But, but, but...people, we are talking about Oprah here. Do you really think it appropriate that others should set foot where her exalted feet have tread?

There are places I go fishing and hiking occasionally. Some of the rivers and trails cut through some property owned by very famous and wealthy people. The ones I have gone through the property owners allow access (within reason). But not the mighty O.

Oh. Speaking of queen O. Anyone who has a chance to cruise around her compound in Maui should ask how much they like being her neighbor. Especially when Empress Moochelle is there.

They had just as many dangerous moonbats and useful idiots then, with even more power. Murrow and Cronkite come to mind.

I spend half the year in Kailua not far from the Won’s Hawaiian compound. Ionly visit Maui and can’t imagine the headache. On those roads by the queen’s ranch.
