Retreat: Cantor blocks DREAM Act for military enlistees from defense bill

Proof that the GOP’s terrified of an immigration backlash from the right in November? Or proof that Eric Cantor in particular is terrified of losing his primary?

I’ll accept “both” as an answer.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will block attempts next week to include a measure on a must-pass defense policy bill that would legalize young undocumented immigrants who serve in the military.

A spokesman confirmed Friday that the legislation, known as the Enlist Act, will not be among those debated with the National Defense Authorization Act, an annual bill that sets policy for the Pentagon. Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.), the Enlist Act’s chief sponsor, had pledged to bring it up as part of the floor battle over the defense bill.

“No proposed ENLIST amendments to NDAA will be made in order,” a Cantor spokesman, Doug Heye, said in an e-mail Friday. He did not elaborate immediately on the reasons.

Cantor’s always seen legalizing DREAMers as a comparatively easy first step towards a wider amnesty. (He was, and maybe is, writing his own version of DREAM, remember.) They’re the most sympathetic class of illegals who are here; tying permanent residency and ultimately citizenship to their willingness to serve in the U.S. military only makes them that much more sympathetic. Border hawks are leery of it, though — especially if it’s attached to a must-pass measure like the defense bill — because it’s a way to get immigration reform to a conference committee, where Reid and Schumer could dramatically expand Enlist before sending it back to the House.

From the article:

Both Denham and Buck McKeon claimed that Cantor quietly supported introducing the Enlist Act. The fact that he’s suddenly changed his mind means either (a) he badly misjudged the degree of resistance to Enlist that he’d see from conservatives or (b) he’s genuinely fearful of what’s going to happen in the primary for his seat in Virginia next month. WaPo had a story about that the other day, claiming that challenger Dave Brat was starting to make Cantor sweat with attacks on him over — ta da — immigration. I didn’t take it seriously because it’s so unusual for a big-name House member like Cantor to lose. His 180 on Enlist makes me wonder, though. What numbers is this guy seeing to make him want to pull the plug now, at a moment when Boehner’s signaling his resolve to tackle immigration this summer? If they’re going to move on amnesty, it makes sense that they’d do it soon and also that they might want to start small, with a measure targeting highly sympathetic illegals. Denham’s ready to help on both counts. Instead Cantor’s running away. Hmmmm.

Cantor needs to be retired along with Mitch so they can spend more quality time together.

“Homicide is a very broad category,” Chishti said. “You can have vehicular homicide. Not everyone is an ax murderer.”

I no longer consider defense authorization bills as “must pass” legislation - our military is in shambles and is an absolute monstrosity. The Left routinely uses this legislation as a Trojan horse to fill with all manner of radical social engineering crap, and then dares conservatives to oppose defense funding that we must have.

Now, I’d rather the military just disband entirely. Let grassroots armed patriots do the defending.

I am dead serious.

” legalize young undocumented immigrants who serve in the military.”

I admit,,,, I’m quite confused on this particular issue! Willingness to serve seems like a positive thing, eh? But I’d like to know how well they serve. I just don’t know for certain.

It’s all about getting a bill to Chuckie Schumer so he can add in the rest of the Amnesty bill added to the House bill in conference so it can be passed before the summer recess in August.

You are correct. Cantor was supporting the ENLIST Act and done a 180 after seeing the reaction it was getting. He is still holding his sponsorship of the KIDS Act, his version of the Dream Act, until after the primary. He is afraid that we might see the details of what he is proposing.

Cantor delenda est.

Jimbo123 is exactly right. What we see is NOT what the bill will be construed to mean, at all.

How can anyone accept that this law will be followed at all when all other existing immigration laws are being flouted? That is insanity to the highest order.

This isn’t the civil war. The vast majority of military personnel never fire a bullet at the enemy and most of these are never in any danger more significant than faced by civilians. Yeah, military service can still be an honorable thing but I see no reason to give a guy doing data entry in the Pentagon amnesty if you’re going to deny it to the guy doing data entry for Corp X. Just more Dem pandering on the ignorance of the public that thinks every soldier is Rambo waking up to dodge gunfire from the Vietcong every morning.

Cantor is DEFINITELY feeling footsteps. We are told that a leader winning his Primary is a forgone conclusion...not a chance for a challenger.

But I still remember Newt, as SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, winning one of his Primaries by something like 50.5 to 49.5. He was VERY HUMBLED by it and said that he would start listening to the needs of his constituents, rather than acting like some God-given visionary. He did and he did fine in Primaries after that.

My point being that the FIRST THING conservatives have to do is stop thinking that Cantor cannot be beaten - HE CERTAINLY CAN, and he has an opponent that’s positioned perfectly to do so.

Let me see if I can straighten out the confusion for you. Currently, illegal aliens aka lawbreakers cannot serve in the US military. Green card holders can serve in the US military as enlisted personnel and as a result, receive an expedited path to citizenship.

The US military is downsizing with tens of thousands of military personnel being involuntarily separated from the military. So exactly why should we have illegal aliens competing with American citizens and legal aliens for the dwindling number of military positions? Are we having a recruitment problem? Are these jobs Americans can't or won't do? I think not.

As a veteran, I also find it insulting that we allow alien lawbreakers to join the military. Military service is an honor and privilege, not a clearing house to confer citizenship on illegal aliens.

The pro-amnesty crowd is just using this as a way to grant legalization to illegal aliens knowing full well the high regard the American people have for military service. After all, who can be against people who will put their lives on the line for this country? The number of illegal aliens who would actually serve would be very low, but the PR value for a blanket amnesty for the 11 to 20 million would be very helpful.

When Eric Cantor was addressing the 7th district:”Harry Reid’s amnesty bill is DOA.”

It should have been Eric Cantor:”Eric Cantor’s Dreamer bill is DOA and will never get a vote in the house”

Anytime legislation “Must-pass” in Washington I get very suspicious. There is absolutely nothing congress does that “must pass”

Insolently foreigners that serve in the military already have a path to citizenship and have for decades.

Those words of Upchuck Schumer warm my heart. Thank heavens for guys like Steve King and, as Upchuck laments, may King indeed be able to call the shots.

The United States government offered citizenship to some Irish males if they would go and fight for the United States in the Mexican War. When the army reached Mexico, they joined up with the Mexicans. When the war was over, they were captured and hanged. What’s missing in all this is patriotism and love of country. This has never worked well.
