OGALES, MEXICO (CNN) Their journey through the desert ended in the back of a U.S. Border Patrol van.
Sitting inside the chapel of the San Juan Bosco shelter for deportees in Nogales, Mexico, Rey and Herlinda rest and wait for another chance to cross illegally into the United States with their children ages 4, 9 and 11 in tow. Temperatures in this stretch of desert that straddles the U.S.-Mexico border hover around 100 degrees.
"I know that I'm putting all three of them at risk, but what else can I do?" said Rey, who says he has lived and worked in the United States without authorization on and off for the past 27 years. Until recently, he kept his family in Mexico, but he says he can no longer afford to sustain two households.
"What's the motivation? When one of my kids asks for meat or (candy), I cannot just say no," Rey added. "Mexico never changes. There was poverty when I left in 1986 and nothing has changed."
Hundreds of thousands of immigrants like Rey and Herlinda have tried to cross illegally into the United States over the past two years, even as the government steps up investments in manpower and technology to secure the nation's borders.
More than 150 end up dead every year. Thousands more get deported every month, according to U.S. Customs and Border and Protection figures. But would-be immigrants keep coming.
"People are still driven by economic necessity to come to the United States by whatever means they can. Some come to join family members already here, others because they are hungry," said Isabel Garcia, a public defender and a co-chair of the Tucson, Arizona-based Coalition for Human Rights.

Bank robbers risk death when they commit their crime.
Burglars risk death when they commit their crime.
etc.
This is just more sob story BS - aka PROPAGANDA.
Nobody is doing anything to stop this invasion.
C’mon and plant 1,000,000 landmines, please.
I’d like to up them odds with a system of Claymores, M60, and M2 interlocking positions all along the border.
The risk isn’t high enough, they all don’t die!
And American Service Men give their lives for these aliens to kill, steel and destroy.
My husband found a human skull in his south Texas hunting pasture a few years ago.
Good!
Do this people even know that they’re risking their like to enter a racist country where they’ll be profiled, victimized and oppressed??
I actually sympathize with this family, but what’s the solution? That’s the part that’s missing. Do we simply open America’s borders and let the world’s needy come on in? I’m sure there are plenty of Africans, Indians, and Chinese who would love to come here.
The story also doesn’t explore why Mexico is such a crap hole. I daresay it’s due to a lack of law and order. Try to build something nice, and someone has their hand out for a bribe or worse, someone comes in and destroys or takes it. So the mentality that says it’s OK to come here and ignore our laws is at least related to Mexico’s own poverty. Not only that, but if we allow that mentality to be imported, we’ll have the same results here as in Mexico.
Sadly, I think we’re already in bad shape in that regard. Too many people don’t really respect the law in this country anymore. Why should they, when our politicians violate the spirit of our founding document on a daily basis? American law today is what the powerful say it is, much like Mexico I think.
Try again...

THIS THREAD immediately follows this one:
1 in 7 prisoners may be illegal alien, Cost to Taxpayers, ELEVEN BILLION: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3157165/posts
Yea!These illegal aliens act like their Gold prospectors.Their just waiting to hit the motherlode.
And those same illegals that come here end up KILLING innocent people and are put back on the streets because the left needs votes
Illegal immigrants repeatedly cause death in the U.S.
Child abuse.
Pure and simple.
They should be imprisoned and the children returned to Mexico to stay with relatives.
Not to worry though, as soon as our corrupt politicians have used the massive influx of illegal aliens to facilitate “fundamental change” in America, our government will have a very strong armed presence at the border to keep people from crossing without government permission.
The big difference will be that the border guards will be there to keep Americans from leaving the United States as opposed to keeping illegals border crossers from entry in much the same way East Germany and the USSR kept their populations and North Korea and Cuba still keeps their people imprisoned within their “peoples utopia”
