Silently among us: Scientists worry about milder cases of MERS

Scientists leading the fight against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome say the next critical front will be understanding how the virus behaves in people with milder infections, who may be spreading the illness without being aware they have it.

Establishing that may be critical to stopping the spread of MERS, which emerged in the Middle East in 2012 and has so far infected more than 500 patients in Saudi Arabia alone. It kills about 30 percent of those who are infected.

It is becoming increasingly clear that people can be infected with MERS without developing severe respiratory disease, said Dr David Swerdlow, who heads the MERS response team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"You don't have to be in the intensive care unit with pneumonia to have a case of MERS," Swerdlow told Reuters. "We assume they are less infectious (to others), but we don't know."

I remember my Grandmother recalling the Spanish Flu.

The symptoms of MERS include coughing, fever, mucus — my wife and kids just got over being sick with those symptoms. For all I know, it could have been a mild form of MERS. No doctor was consulted, everybody’s better now, after being sick for 4-7 days with it.

If MERS has entered this country because this administration failed to do its due diligence when would you expect them to come forward and admit to it?

The incubation period for MERS is 12 days. Don’t know if that info will scare you or make you feel better, but though you should know.

This is how Gov’t operates...they often know that a crises is coming and send dis-information agents

Well, those pandemic scares over the last 2 decades or so haven't materialized so I will go with my theory for now...the CDC wants their taxpayer money.

And of course, we all know it's budget time when NASA announces water/life/whatever on the Moon or Mars.

Yep.

You are assuming that there is anything that any President could do to stop entry of a airborne-spread disease.

In the age of air travel, a person could be infected in China, take a plane to Japan, switching to another plane to LA, switching to a third plane to Chicago, infecting much of his fellow passengers along the way, and all before showing any symptom. How is the federal government going to stop an infected but asymptomatic US citizen from returning home?

Meanwhile, 77% of those infected with flu are asymptomatic, and so would not give any indication that they were sick, while passing along the flu to the people around them.

I assumed you would.

But my observation is that scares are often intended to get Federal funding (global warming being the biggest fraud for this purpose). And all those pandemic scares have come to naught over the years.

This is how the Federal Gov't operates and many still don't get it.

No I always assume even if there was something he could do he most likely would bother with it and that seems just fine with some people. But you still didn’t answer the question would you expect this administration to come straight out and tell the truth about such a situation?

Import some of that Middle East camel meat, infected by bat feces, and you will have a MERS problem. Word of caution, don’t eat imported camel meat.

Another caution, don’t eat human flesh like they are doing over there. It will give you Kuru or as tribemen call it, the “laughing sickness” as your nervous system shuts down. The Islamo-Fascists are slaughtering Christians and eating their flesh. Don’t confuse MERS with Kuru. To be safe, don’t live over there for any amount of money.

Is there any cure for this stuff or is this part of the depopulation program?

Yes I get it this administration has shown far more that they practice and are masters of disinformation far more than scare tactics and some people can see it even after 5 years of it.

Pretending that some of these pandemics are real threats IS disinformation.

That's my point.

The federal Gov't does stuff like this all the time to get more funding.

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger. Underestimation can be fatal.”

It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred then it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation.

A good article on ‘Normalcy Bias’ is on our own ChocChipCookies Blog The Survival Mom:

You raise a good question about the health of passengers on board airliners. If I were a terrorist, germ warfare would do more damage than blowing up an airplane. Are we entering an age when pre-flight medical examinations are necessary for all passengers coming into the United States? Will that include X-rays to screen for implantable explosive devices?

I said it before on other threads about MERS. I think it’s a biological attack on the U.S. Seemingly healthy visitors from the Middle East come to the U.S., on vacation or whatever, become ill with MERS (that they’ve apparently been carrying) get treated and all the while spread it to hospital workers, who in turn bring home to their families, who in turn....

would you expect this administration to come straight out and tell the truth about such a situation?

I would expect them to lie about what Obama had for breakfast. The only words that will ever come out of the Administration is whatever they calculate will improve their political position. All else will go unmentioned.
