Plan to name cove after Mark Twain scrapped after tribe complains (He was Racist)
Fox News ^ | Joshua Miller

"Samuel Clemens had racist views on the native people of this country and has captured those views in his literature," Cruz wrote in a letter to the board. He also took exception to a Twain quote about Lake Tahoe: "People say that Tahoe means 'Silver Lake' — 'Limpid Water' — 'Falling Leaf.' Bosh! It means grasshopper soup, the favorite dish of the digger tribe — and of the Pi-utes as well."

" the famous author, by his own account, once let a campfire of his get out of hand and ignite a big swath of forest -- while Twain and a friend climbed into a rowboat and watched while out on the water."

WOW! They have all their bases covered-- he was racist AND he burned some trees. That's the gay trifecta of doom right there. And yes, I am aware tri means three. It's funnier that way.

I’m just curious: how many white men are in the Washoe tribe?

Could a white man join the tribe right now if they wanted too?

So what’s wrong with racism and racist laws now?

This is getting ridiculous, I met the man once and he was certainly not a racist

One of these days, we, as a notion, are going to grow a set and tell all the complaining minorities that we are a nation of the (majority) people. Everybody seems to wake up in the morning wondering how they can complain about how America is slighting them.

The only way to overcome this obsession with “me”, is to give every American a piece of land and call them an independent nation and let them negotiate with their neighbors..

I wonder how many historic sites around Lake Tahoe are named for California governors or members of the state house during the time that the state of California offered bounties for diggers?

Mmm, those crickets I'm hearing sound mighty tasty.

As for the Washoe Indians, I give you the one finger salute for yet again being utter idiots. (And yep, there isn't a being on the planet more racist than an American Indian, just ask how they feel about their ‘neighboring’ tribe...)

***the favorite dish of the digger tribe — and of the Pi-utes as well.”

I read that an early American scouting party was starved, found and scared off Indians preparing food for the winter. They gorged themselves then found the ground food was——EARTHWORMS!
Even though they were starving the puked their guts out.

There’s a resort area near Lake Tahoe called Squaw Valley. It will probably be renamed, if it hasn’t been already.

Oh WHAT BULLSH*T. Twain, if anything, did more to humanize the plight of the blacks than anything through “Huckleberry Finn”. The scene where Huck is willing to go to hell for Jim ALONE should win him a place in the hallowed halls of anti-racists.

One of my favorite lines from "Roughing It" is when he visited Mono Lake and talked about the worms living in it.

Providence leaves nothing to go by chance. All things have their uses and their part and proper place in Nature's economy: the ducks eat the flies—the flies eat the worms—the Indians eat all three—the wild cats eat the Indians—the white folks eat the wild cats—and thus all things are lovely.

It’s a discussion that has been going on for years. Most people just don’t care one way or the other. Those who have monetary interests in the local tourist trade around the cove have been pushing for it, hoping that a change of name will bring more people. Naturally those who use the area now, or live near there don’t want the added attention and oppose it.

As far as the Washoe - they oppose everything. Every place in and around Tahoe has some special spiritual meeting. A few of them will show up at any meeting that discusses some local area and oppose everything. Want to put in a new ski lift? Sorry - it crosses some sacred ground. Want to build a new ski lodge? Sorry again. A new mountain biking trail? Nope. The arguments are barely intelligible. I feel sorry for any kid growing up Washoe as it’s pretty clear the only education they are getting is education about native history and culture, and clearly nothing is preparing them should they wish to make a living off the reservation. These kids seem destined to live in tribal poverty for their generation, those of their child and grandchildren. If they want to choose that life - I think it’s great. However why not properly educate them in reading, writing, speaking, modern history, math, science, and then let them choose which world to live in instead of setting them up for only a program of poverty by omission.

The site of the 1960 winter Olympics. They had been talking about changing that name for many years now. I thought they had already changed it. I can't believe I spent 30 years in California.

“This is getting ridiculous, I met the man once and he was certainly not a racist”

Are you serious?

Mark Twain died in 1910.
