Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- The U.S. military has doubled the number of aircraft standing by in Italy if needed to evacuate Americans from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, CNN has learned.

A decision to evacuate as violence in the Libyan capital grows is "minute by minute, hour by hour," a defense official told CNN on Monday.

Fierce fighting swept across the city Sunday after armed men stormed the country's interim Parliament. Sporadic bursts of gunfire and blasts could still be heard on the outskirts of the capital Monday evening.

The violence appeared to be some of the worst since the 2011 revolution that ousted longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.

In a move that could further inflame an already tense situation, the speaker of the interim parliament, Nuri Abu Sahmain, who is backed by Islamist forces, ordered troops known as the "Central Libya Shield Forces" to deploy to the capital Monday, the Libyan state news agency LANA reported.

I bet if you search CNN’s site (I wouldn’t) this would be the first article about Libya since.... sometime in Spring 2012.

Can we all agree that if more of our people are killed in Libya it will be pitchfork time?

I can't imagine why they don't just pull the US citizens out now and let what's left of the Libyan military sort out the mess we and NATO created.

Unless the US is still involved in that regime change stuff......

There was no evacuation of Libya, was there?

Did they even evacuate the bodies after they were dead?

Its hilarious how the administration and media toads are going way out of their way to seem ‘on top’ of developing events in Libya this time.

Their decision of eliminating the Libyan leader was an idea headed for disaster, as we now see, even though he was a nut case....
Sudden moves like that upset the entire region. This group has no idea what they are doing in foreign policy, and the damage of years of real diplomacy may not be fixable. The balance of power the US enjoyed had to do with not being anxious to eliminate those who were our enemies. Most of our wars were started by Democrat Presidents.

no argument that khaddafi was a nut case, but he had become a good asset for US policy in middle east. he was especially valuable because he fought al qaeda, that supposedly was the enemy of America too. imagine that.

My thoughts were as yours knowing he helped us...basically our nut case, only wanted to note I wasn’t defending him. He was one of those ‘necessary evils’ we kept around to keep out a worse one....which is what we have now.
