I was part of V Corps Artillery (1978-81) and stationed at Camp Pieri in Wiesbaden. It was just down the hill from the article’s noted golf course, Rheinblick. I wish I had been into golf then like I am now because I know I really missed out in not have taken advantage of that course back then.

The move of USAREUR from Heidelberg to Wiesbaden is everything old becoming new again. When I arrived in Wiesbaden, it hadn’t been that long since USAFE had decamped to Ramstein AB, leaving the USAF Hospital and Lindsey AS as the main remaining facilities with USAF personnel. There was one other small kaserne near the Rhein River that was hush-hush USAF photo interp. The USAF also left some great housing with O-5s and O-6s in houses that previously only had general officers as residents.

Brigade 76 had taken over the local air base of Berlin Airlift fame. The brigade morphed into the 4th Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division and was later folded into the 8th Infantry Division.

Your mention of Schwarzkopf as the Mainz Military Community Commander means we were there at the same time. He definitely had a reputation since it carried across the river, too.

They had plenty of money to repave a parking lot at our Commissary, that did NOT need repaving. Install in $7K speed bumps in 5 mph parking lots of Commissary and Exchange. Those at the gates I can buy, but not the parking lots. No where else on the base got them. And they installed several non essential monuments. Millington, TN BUPERS NAVY Base.

I drive a Corolla, no sooner than my front wheels clear, then the back ones are ready to roller over this bone jarring sucker, even creeping over it.
