Walking a Fine Line on Campaign Finance [McCain is deeply saddened]

WASHINGTON — There are three big winners from the recent Supreme Court decisions that Senator John McCain says might “dismantle entirely” campaign finance laws: wealthy interests, greedy politicians and investigative journalists.

The decisions, culminating in another loosening of restrictions last month, were crafted by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and a slim majority. They essentially contend that limitations on campaign financing impede speech and that the system profits from more money.

The consequence will be record sums of cash in the midterm races this year, and for the 2016 presidential election.

Wealthy individuals, corporations and unions will spend unlimited sums to affect elections, and rich donors can now give huge amounts to political party committees.

All this cash sloshing around seems certain to produce the mother of all political scandals. Why? It always does. The initial ban on corporate contributions more than a century ago was in response to bribes; more recent limitations grew out of Watergate, when excessive money led to corruption and criminality.

The definition of corruption was hotly debated on the court by Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Stephen G. Breyer. The chief justice, who opposes most campaign finance restrictions, offered a narrow interpretation: Political corruption is bribery only, a direct exchange of an official act for money.

How about simply prosecuting the corrupt bribe taking politicians instead of violating our free speech rights? Now there's a novel idea.

The Democrat Party will never listen to reason. They view their politicians as deities, and to them, questioning their deities is worthy of punishment. It’s quite scary to think that people actually believe they only have rights by the grace of their Obamessiah.

But Barack Obama can take in hundreds of millions of laundered foreign dollars through anonymous prepaid debit cards, and that’s perfectly OK.

We can appropriate funds to build a bigger jail. Say, my cousin builds jails. Maybe we can get him to give us a discount.

And, if you want to reduce corruption, reduce the power and scope of government.

So long as federal legislation holds the power of life and death over corporations, corporations have the right to defend themselves.

Amen. Simply abide by the constitution and the central government could be reduced by about 80%!

Greedy politicians?

One of the baser aspects of McCain-Feingold was that it favored the re-election efforts of incumbents. McCain wrote it; that makes him a greedy politician.

In addition to being a dim bulb, and, in the opinion of many, a puppet of the NVA/DNC.

The irony is that wealthy interests were never shut out of government manipulation or control. Hasn’t the NYTs ever heard of “limousine liberals”?
