Never before was Election Day so colorful in Ukraine. Thousands of Ukrainians honored the day of voting fot the nation’s fifth president by wearing national costumes.

Iryna Kalashnyk from Kyiv was one of many who wore a traditional embroidered shirt, or "vyshyvanka," when she went to the polling station.

“We have to show the whole world that we maintain our traditions and that we, Ukrainians, love Ukraine despite the troubles of the last six months,” Kalashnyk told the Kyiv Post.

Let’s hope Ukraine under new leadership provides an example that horrifies Putin and his criminal buddies.

Why must it? Embroidered tunic is a part of many traditional Slavonic costumes, including Russian, Croatian, Slovak, Ukrainian ones... As well as some regions of Norway.

The epitome of peaceful protest and a show of patriotism.

God bless Ukraine and her people.

In my first semester of Art College (back in 1970), I was assigned a thesis on Folk Art. I chose vyshyvanka , and did a huge project which included an entire outfit hand made and embroidered by myself.

The liberal marxist idiot professor gave me a “C’, claiming that if it wasn’t African or some other non-white tribal construct, it did not qualify as “Art”.

I stood my ground and fought with him until he grudgingly gave me a “B”.

The colleges were hotbeds of liberal bigotry and snobbery even way back then.

Yes, it is, but it is also a cultural symbol the Marxist-Leninists sought to co-opt for Communism and in the case of the Ukraine served as what the Bolshevists sometimes derogated as a “counter-revolutionary influence” to be discouraged if not outright destroyed.

It’s what the tunic represents which is an in your face show of national solidarity. Ukrainians flipped Putin the bird in a sartorial sense.

Yes, Ukrainians are more united when they are without the three provinces.

a cultural symbol

as any symbol is subject to interpretation. A spectator will choose the interpretation he likes.

This bias was so amazingly open. 'I do what I want, I don't care whether it's wrong or right, I'm a professor!'

Indeed.

You are SO right about that.

And this was 40 YEARS ago.

The pustule that is marxism in America has been festering a LONG time.

Russians weren't the inventors of Marxism. It's an influential Western philosophical theory from the middle of the XIX century. Russuans just put it to life and in this way served as an example to other nations.
