The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina along the Mississippi coast was fresh in Haley Barbour's mind when he met with Sen. Thad Cochran and other members of the congressional delegation about aid in 2005.
"My first trip to Washington after Katrina, Senator Cochran said, 'You tell me what the state needs and I'll try to get it,'" Barbour told CNN. "He never deviated from that and ultimately he succeeded."
Cochran did it, Barbour and political observers said, by employing the same sort of quiet, persistence that has marked his 36-year tenure in the Senate. He worked behind the scenes, talking with colleagues, negotiating and eventually he was able to net $29 billion in relief money.
He also worked across the aisle with Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana to reform the law governing federal disaster relief policies aimed at helping communities recover.
Their efforts helped ensure that the victims of broad devastation, such as the type seen after Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy in 2012, could get aid for housing and rebuilding.
"In our time of greatest need, he was the giant in the delegation for Mississippi," Barbour said.
Now, one of the longest serving lawmakers in Congress is facing a very different type of storm.
Cochran is a septuagenarian facing a serious challenge from arch-conservative Chris McDaniel, a state senator who is just over half his age and has the grassroots support of the tea party, the Club for Growth and Sarah Palin.

And this is why CNN likes him so much, because he votes with the democrats 50% of the time. That's pragmatic, reasonable, responsible, dontcha know!
Cochran (MS) - 06/03/14 - 54% (Average) - 57% (Heritage) - 56% (CFG) - 60% (ACU) - 41% (FreedomWorks)
‘You tell me what the state needs and I’ll try to get it,’
Who would have said or done anything else? That’s what he was supposed to do in that situation. Talk about setting the bar low.
I hope the folks in Mississippi will move past the old politics of Boss Hogg
Haley Barbour and Thad Cochran.
Yep, here’s the pragmatist’s credo “whatever!” (Phhhht!)
This guy is getting lacquered with every Democrat Media praise phrase in an effort to help him keep his Senate seat. I bet he would even sit up and bark "bow-wow" if the Democrats ordered him to.
Ray "Schoolbus" Nagin and Kathleen Blankstare sure didn't want to do what they were supposed to do.
good point. I guess we can’t even take a basic level of competence for granted.
CNN weighs in with a Muslim reporter to tell all of us that Thad Cochran is a giant among Southern politicians ranking right up there with Jefferson, Jackson, Calhoun, and Huey Long. A champion of the people and the savior of the Republican Party.
Yessirree folks, that’s who we want. We want the same staunch Conservative that left wing CNN likes, that the Democrat Party loves and who has been a conductor on the corruption train for over 40 years. He brings home the bacon and it all goes on the plates of the rich and powerful. Everyone else make do with Schweinhaxe (pigs feet).
And, he’s living with his girlfriend who is on his payroll and jaunts around the world with him pretending to be his “spouse”, all at taxpayer expense while his real wife rots away in some nursing home in Mississippi. Who wouldn’t want a guy like that representing us Conservatives in the great State of Mississippi?
Who indeed.
Couldn’t be said better!!
Anyone CNN endorses is not the guy for the job. I pray that there will be Thunder storms all day long in MS on Primary Election Day and there is a horrendously low turn-out.
The Mississippi Board of Elections is asking that the General Public help spread the word that due to an anticipated heavy turn-out for the 2014 GOP Primary, Chris McDaniel supporters are asked to vote on Tuesday June 3 and Thad Cochran supporters are asked to vote on Wednesday, June 4th. Thanks for you help and your cooperation.
“after Katrina, Senator Cochran said, ‘You tell me what the state needs and I’ll try to get it,’” Barbour told CNN. “He never deviated from that and ultimately he succeeded.”
And is Katrina why Sen. Big Spender voted for TARP, Cash for Clunkers, the bank bailout, Medicare Part D, etc., etc.?
Send this jerk to the shuffle board tournaments at the old folks home. He’s a big part of the problem. McDaniel will be part of the solution.
“Dude, Katrina was. like....more than two years ago!”
Vote for Cochran, because he steals more from Americans in the other 49 States than they steal from Mississippi. Where’s that voting lever, sign me up.
I must agree. That is a low bar. What I wonder about is, where do you set the bar for a sitting U.S.Senator that has had his wife in a nursing home for 14 years while he globe hops with a mistress on taxpayers' dimes? Do you have any clue dawg?
I don't think it could be said better. Thank you centurion316.
I like the way you're thinking SharpRightTurn. The problem is, he is too old to play shuffle board.
Doesn’t take much of a clue to set the bar on that one, not that we don’t already have plenty of reasons to support the challenger in Mississippi. Cochran is long overdue for retirement. States like Mississippi can do better.
