Shooting victim’s father to Congress: Give me gun control, not sympathy

Richard Martinez grew up around guns, shooting birds out of the fruit trees on his family’s farm. He later served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army before going on to become a criminal defense lawyer, at times representing the young and the violent.

Now, Martinez is a grieving father.

He’s asking members of Congress to stop calling him to offer condolences but nothing more for the death of his only child, Christopher Michaels-Martinez, who was killed in the rampage Friday in Santa Barbara, California.

“I don’t care about your sympathy. I don’t give a s— that you feel sorry for me,” Richard Martinez said during an extensive interview, his face flushed as tears rolled down his face. “Get to work and do something. I’ll tell the president the same thing if he calls me. Getting a call from a politician doesn’t impress me.”

Saying “we are all to blame” for the death of his 20-year-old son, Martinez urged the public to join him in demanding “immediate action” from members of Congress and President Barack Obama to curb gun violence by passing stricter gun-control laws.

OH, he’s criminal defense lawyer.

I get it.

Hey, grieving father.

“Grieve.” PRAY for your son’s soul.

That’s my suggestion.

“Stop beating around the bush and support a total gun ban then.
I want Martinez, or anyone in the Democrat/media establishment, to just come out and say it. Say that it’s time for everyone in America to turn in their guns.”

But that would require intellectual honesty from the leftists. No matter what incremental gun control laws are passed in order to stop this sort of thing there will only be another eventually, followed by more disingenuous callers for yet more gun control, as has happened over the last thirty years, instead of addressing the real underlying cultural and social and mental illness causes.

Sadly, while such efforts can be obstructed and slowed down, given present trends I doubt this strategy can be stopped in the long term unless there is a real awakening, or revolution.

And how will they blame the NRA when no guns are used?

If Mr. Martinez wants more gun control he should use both hands.

What did I read lately? Your loss does not trump my COnstitutional rights?
I don’t blame the system, I blame the person(s). But then, I have a sane, rational mind.

for a democrat, nothing is more important than the ‘agenda’. All too often we see political visionaries dancing or campaigning on top of their ‘loved one’s’ coffin.

It is always the gun that did the crime, not some drug altered whack job.

This idiot does not sympathy, he wants gun control. He sacrificed his some to the cause and now he wants results. He is not interested in reducing violence, He wants guns eliminated. He knows the answer to the problem and it is settled science.

Sick sick sick people.

Screw Martinez. I’ve been out of my mind with grief at the death of my little brother. It never would have occurred to me to disarm people who the police have no obligation or ability to defend. I am sorry his son was murdered. I am sorry that gun free zones result in more deaths than necessary but I am not going to let Martinez and those like him make my family sitting ducks for predators.

“we are all to blame” for the death of his 20-year-old son.

“We are all responsible....for racism, sexism, bigotry, homophobia, etc.”

“If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.”

I do not know the source of your grief but the loss of a brother can be very difficult. You have my sympathies for your loss.

Thanks but we’re talking a long time ago. Still love my brother still can’t stand liberals who use anything to advance their irrational agendas. Martinez, if he was an MP, knows full well that automatic weapons are not available at WalMart and he should know that nobody is responsible for his son’s murder except for the whackjob that killed him.

Saying that “we are all to blame” for the death of his 20-year-old son, Martinez urged the public to join him in demanding “immediate action” from members of Congress and President Obama to curb gun violence by passing stricter gun- control laws.

Martinez vowed that he’s not going away. He said his training as a lawyer explains, in part, why he has not retreated from public view as many parents do after such a tragedy.

“We are tough people,” Martinez said of himself and Christopher’s mother, Caryn Johnson Michaels, a deputy district attorney in San Luis Obispo. (The couple separated when Christopher was young.) “Caryn was in charge of the sex-crime unit. We fight.”

AH my mistake, I thought this was the boy’s father going on about gun control again.

Which I have really had it with.

As a law abiding citizen, I am getting extremely tired of being attacked for crimes committed by others ;/

I saw this idiot on tv yesterday. Loud mouth bonehead. I really don’t care if his son was killed by a crazy kid or not. This guy’s values contributed to it.
