Former Egyptian army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi won a landslide victory in a presidential election on Thursday but a low turnout may have deprived him of the strong mandate he needs to fix the economy and face down an Islamist insurgency.
Sisi won 93.3 percent of votes cast, judicial sources said, with most ballots counted after three days of voting. His only rival, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, gained 3 percent while 3.7 percent of votes were declared void.
But a lower-than-expected turnout figure raised questions about the credibility of a man idolised by his supporters as a hero who can deliver stability.

He would learn that the power of the upsurper is fatally flawed by the taint if illegitimacy. the reign usually is unhappy and does not last long. despite the fact that political Islam is rightly despised, Sis will be haunted by two very inconvenient fact. Mursi was the duly elected President of Egypt. Sis’s military killed over one thousand unarmed people protesting the coup. People and the gods simply do not forget.
93pct is not a democratic election.
This is a Soviet outcome.
Granted that Egypt is unlikely to do better than this guy, but its clear he is in fact a dictator like all his predecessors.

He’s a former army general which means he has been talking with Israeli generals for all these years.
Better him than a Muzzy. I wouldn’t be suprised if the Israelis are feeding him intelligence on the Bruthas.
They also extended the voting for an extra day due to low turnout.
At best they’re back to square one, at worse we’ll see a new round of protests and an uprising.
93% of the vote when your oposition is the Muslim Brotherhood and they boycott the election is not surprising.
In any event, Egypt is far better off with Sisi than the opposition. Given the choice of Sisi or the Muslim brotherhood; it’s an easy decision.
The vast majority of Egyptians hate the Muslim Brotherhood. It just might not be to healthy to be open about it.
The MB have haunted Egyptians since around 1925, and they had their time in power only to be overthrown because of the corrupt manner in which they exercised their power - they continued to rule as if they were insurgents - people will not forget the MB and the next thirty years they will die off.
Sissi was hand picked by Morsi to head the military.
Sissi “refused” the order by Morsi to fire on the Egyptian citizens.
Sissi stepped in the breech and stopped a total take over by Islamists.
He stopped the killing of Egyptian Coptic Christians and promised to rebuild the churches and schools that the Islamists destroyed. He is delivering on that promise.
SO, lets present it as it happened.
Yes he killed quite a few Islamists Terrorists. And they tried and convicted many more. They are facing death sentences. (which he might commute as President, if they cooperate)
He is not a dummy, and Egypt is unified around him.
They could do a lot worse.
Yes it is surprising.
Given that there should be a considerable proportion of the population generally unhappy with everything the usual result in an election even with such a limited choice would be that the “protest” votes will go to whoever else is running. No matter who.
So I could believe a reasonably fair election was held if Sisi got something like 60-70% - and a really smart election rigger could have managed that too I think, as the test of a good liar is how well he fakes sincerity - but 93% tells me they just made up unanimity to please the boss.
