Santorum Campaigns for McDaniel as Pro-Cochran Group Turns to Democrat Voters for Help

DIAMONDHEAD, Mississippi — With only one full day before polls open for the Mississippi GOP senate primary, former Pennsylvania Senator and 2012 presidential candidate Rick Santorum headlined a campaign stop on the Gulf Coast, telling an audience of 200 that state senator Chris McDaniel is a candidate who will shake up Washington, D.C.

With polls showing a neck-and-neck race, incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) faced questions about a campaign advertisement for Cochran in a self-described “African American owned newspaper” and in online web ads explicitly calling on Democrats to cross party lines and vote in the GOP primary for Cochran.

snip

The Cochran ads asking for Democratic support praise Cochran for “Serving All Mississippians” and say, “Cochran’s long record of service gets praise from Democrats & Republicans.”

That ad lists bullet points including that Cochran “treats constituents fair and impartial regardless of political affiliation”; how he “provided” millions of dollars in federal funding to various organizations; and “established blight protection in minority communities by providing resources to remove debris from channels, reshape eroded banks, correct damage drainage facilities, and repair levees across the Jackson metro and Delta region.”

The ads also note he steered taxpayer dollars to “more than 20 free clinics in our neighborhoods” and that Cochran was “behind” the “latest farm bill that funds the SNAP program” which provides food stamps to people.

“We're asking democrats [sic] to cross over and vote in the republican [sic] primary to ensure our community's interest is heard,” the ad concludes.

And then there’s this little gem!

“Henry Barbour, the nephew of former Gov. Haley Barbour and head of pro-Cochran Super PAC Mississippi Conservatives, tweeted in response to conservative criticism that Cochran would turn to Democrats for help: “do you have an issue with black people voting in R primary?”

For conservatives are racists dontcha know! AND there are no black republicans!

If grandpa gets his wish, I’m not voting in November. They have pushed me too far

Cochran will do anything to save his seat. At his age, he should be content to live without the crutch of a government job to give his life meaning. He should be forcibly retired by the voters, because he has been in office too long.

This is why the GOP fights so hard to keep open primaries. The liberal Republican party must be destroyed. It will get conservative or it will be destroyed.

I feel nothing but bad JuJu for Cochran’s future as a US Senator. That’s a direct quote from my psychic, Xena, the Rat Terrier. She’s adroit at telliing me when bad things are going to happen out on the lawn, and they usually do. So if I were Thad I’d be calling in my chits with the K Street gang.

“This is why the GOP fights so hard to keep open primaries.”

That’s absolutely right. The unbelievable gall of this statement: “do you have an issue with black people voting in R primary?”

And the proper answer is: “not if they’re republicans. If they’re democrats they should vote in their own damn primary!”

Elitest oligarchs!

I have to respond to your post. I am the same age as Senator Cochran, and am in no way “over the Hill”. It is insulting to thousands of other Mississippians that remarks like yours, which have permeated the McDaniel campaign, will motivate them to vote against your candidate. That along with the fact that this is not really a campaign of Mississippians, but a national Tea Party campaign.

My two cents worth. Fire when ready.

It’s not about the old age, but the treachery.

I doubt that they find a whole lot of Dems that vote for Cockran, considering who he is. But it does show just how desperate his campaign now is.

In the oddball chance that the Democratic primary is won by Bill Marcy, that would not be a bad vote. I met Marcy a couple of times when he was running as a repub in local/state offices. I am not sure he isn't a plant by Repub macine, but a vote against the esconched too busy for rank and file repubs/conservatives current holder of that seat is still a message.
That is, of course, if Chris McDaniel doesn't win Tuesday . Do y'all think the vote will be rigged?

I wouldn’t think that most MS Democrats even know that they can raid a GOP primary; most wouldn’t be comfortable doing that because they are Democrat forever to the core.

True, especially in the South. I was worried about that with Dan Patrick here in Texas, as runoff turnout is only about 3% of registered voters and anyone, of any party, can vote in the runoff, with the one exception that they didn’t vote in another party’s primary.

That meant that every Democrat that didn’t vote in the March Primary in Texas was free to vote in the Republican Runoff in May - absolute STUPID system. Thankfully, nothing ever came of it and we have our Tea Party guy ready to roll.

The MSM is in the tank for Cochran. Was reading some of the articles. McDaniel’s best quotes would never see the light of day except for Breitbart, and they are pounding McDaniel’s so-called espionage like it’s a hammer and nail.

I have no problem with his age; it’s what he has become. A RINO puppet who does what his mistress tells him, even to extent of holding fundraisers for Democrats in his, and her, home. He slipped the other day and complimented Obama’s efforts on ObamaCare. An aide called later and said he thought the question was about the VA.... There has never been a discussion about the VA providing affordable health care for all Americans. He will not Debate his Primary opponent, and thereby robbing his constituents of a fair opportunity to evaluate both candidates. And now, he’s trying to get Black Democrats to vote for him in the GOP Primary. He’s scaring them; telling them they better vote for him if they want to continue getting their “benefits” from the govmint. HE IS A DESPICABLE, WHITE TRASH, PIECE OF S**T!

This is blatant patronizing of the Black Community. Where is the outrage from Black Pastors and Al Sharpton?

Frankly, I think he’s running to keep the seat in the GOP establishment’s corner. I think that, if he wins, he will retire shortly and the Republican governor will appoint someone, possibly Haley Barbour, definitely establishment.
