WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two Republican lawmakers say President Barack Obama violated U.S. laws when he approved the exchange of an American soldier believed held by Islamist insurgents for five years for five Afghan detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Congressman Howard "Buck" McKeon of California and Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma said Saturday in a statement that Obama is required by law to notify Congress 30 days before any transfer of terrorists from the U.S. detention facility.

Benghazi murders were no big deal. Veterans are still be left to die. Now Obama exchanges A soldier, who many claim was a military deserter, in exchange for numerous extremely dangerous terrorists in Guantanamo, all while circumventing the law.

The American "prisoners" family happened to be in DC for a photo op after. Republicans formally announce that Obama is breaking US laws and it barely gets buried.

We are not a free country FRiends.

If a future administration declares a “unique and exigent circumstance” can they abolish the IRS, EPA, HHS, AG, and Education departments?

I read that when Obama signed the law, he did so with a “signing statement” that said he did not consider that the law had any effect on him and he did not intend to abide by it. Anybody know if this is true?

I’m not sure when this law was issued, and perhaps it was when the GOP was not in power in the House, but I’m surprised there wasn’t any outcry about it at the time. Essentially, he was just saying that the law was what he said it was, and he could suspend or ignore it at any time. I guess you have to give him credit for announcing it so openly, but it would have been nicer if US lawmakers had noticed and brought this to public attention at the time.

The GOP should be very careful with this and let things develop. I think we’ll find that this guy was a willing “prisoner” and letting him play us for fools for a few weeks might not be a bad strategy.

Five of the most notorious prisoners at Gitmo were released in exchange for the SGT. Getting the SGT. back is great. Doing a prisoner exchange is a bad precedent which will come back to haunt us with more deaths of Americans. It seems that we would have been better served to allow the CIA, Seal Teams & special forces a free reign to free the GI. (Too bad Obama & Holder weren’t exchanged for the
SGT.)

Obama walks as a god among us mere mortals. The colossus of his genius is known throughout the 57 states. Laws are for humans. He need obey no laws! He can rail about Bush and Iraq and then destroy Libya with impunity. Avert your eyes when he walks by lest you be struck blind by his magnificence!

Obama is dumber than donuts.

What’s the point of stating that this POS’ administration once again broke the law if you have no intention of doing anything about it, you limp-wristed pansies? I’m guessing so they can be on record as noticing another lawless act? The GOPe is absolutely gutless and worthless...

At least this won’t encourage the Taliban to kidnap American soldiers so they can exchange them...

I wonder if Karzai’s refusal to meet with Dear Leader was a protest against this “exchange”.

I've seen some of the other postings about this, including the Daily Mail (a UK publication) article about this.

I think you are right. If this guy comes home and gets the hero treatment, this is likely to come out. The question is whether the US media will touch it.

I saw one posting naming several soldiers that were killed in action, while looking for this guy after he allegedly deserted his post. This could blow up into something of epic proportions.

If the accounts are true. Obama broke the law to rescue a deserter that got soldiers killed. He may not get impeached, but public opinion is likely to plummet.

Two answers. Pick one.

‘Law? What law, doesn’t apply to me.’
or
“At this point, What difference does it make!”

Obama will play this up as Republicans hate veterans and do not care about our active military.

This move will only encourage more terrorists to capture and hold American military personnel for prisoner exchange rather than attempt to kill American military personnel outright.

“The Obama administration hates the fact that Congress legislated restrictions on their Guantanamo authority, believing it to be a politicization of national security, but it simply broke the law when it saw an opportunity. It is gambling that no one will care during the enthusiasm over Bergdahl’s return.

Whether or not the trade encourages the hostage taking of Americans by terrorists seeking to free their comrades is an empirical question that will vindicate either Obama or his critics. Less debatable is the negligible impact that Bergdahl’s release has on the fate of the war that led to his captivity.”
