Alabamians Divided on Jefferson Davis Holiday
The Wall Street Journal ^ | une 1, 2014 | IANTHE JEANNE DUGAN

Posted on 06/01/2014 7:51:02 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

Alabama state offices will be closed Monday for an annual holiday that some residents celebrate, others would like to eliminate and some just don't understand: Jefferson Davis's birthday.

The Confederacy's first and only president was captured in Georgia in 1865 and accused of treason and helping to plot to kill President Abraham Lincoln. He was imprisoned for two years but never tried, and shortly before his death in 1889, he advised Southerners: "The past is dead; let it bury its dead, its hopes and its aspirations."

FUWSJ

It's all over but the shouting for the 1st American Republic, it is predictably self destructing due to the imposition of Universal Suffrage.

Honest Ape mortally wounded the Republic when he brutally attacked and murdered the sons of the Founders, the last 150 years has been merely death rattle.

Jeff Davis is looking better the older I get. CW2 is coming and it will not be north-south, nor east-west but red against blue.

Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy killed the issue of States Rights forever by inextricably linking it to slavery.

Believe it or not, there were Southerners who realized this at the time. The only abolitionists were not in the North.

Bottom line: just when states need the power of Secession to bring a runaway Federal Government into constitutional line, it isn't available.

OTOH, To this day, one meets Confederate sympathizers who insist "The War of Northern Aggression" (which is what it was) was not about slavery. Of course it was, from day one. Even though Lincoln said it wasn't.... and took 2 years to get around to The Emancipation.

What I'd like to know is: When did Alabama START celebrating Jefferson Davis's birthday? Also: Which party controlled the Alabama state legislature at that time?

Inquiring minds want etc....

Regards,

what percentage of people under age 30, even know who this man was?

If the answers given to roving reporter Jesse Watters by college-age bathers at Jones Beach, NY accurately reflect the knowledge level of this age group, the percentage is probably very low.

When asked who we fought in the Revolutionary War, answers from these beachgoers included the French and China. One bather called George Washington "the second president after Lincoln." From this group, we also learned that we fought the South in World War II, that Korea bombed Pearl Harbor, and that the Cold War was so named because it's cold in Russia.

See this Watters' World broadcast of a few days ago.

“Divided” means that professional whiners like Alvin Holmes won’t shut up about it.

“Even though Lincoln said it wasn’t.... and took 2 years to get around to The Emancipation.”

The Emancipation only freed slaves in the states that had seceded. Two border states fought for the Union with their slavery intact.

Slavery was the excuse given for the war by the north; the treatment of blacks throughout the country afterwards indicates to me that the war was never about them...

It appears Lincoln disagrees!!!

“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause.” – August 22, 1862 – Letter to Horace Greeley - See more at: http://www.civil-war-enthusiast.com/abraham-lincoln/#sthash.PkrtBJvk.dpuf
