A Stanford political science professor was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport last week for having a hand grenade in his carry-on luggage.
Gary Walter Cox had come across the WW II Mk-2 grenade while cleaning out his recently deceased fathers home, where it had been used as a paperweight by the former Navy captain.

Testing the system maybe?
It is probably a practice hand-grenade: iron casting with a hole in the bottom and the ability to put in a real fuse. You can buy then for about $30. We had one we played with when I was a kid.
I love it when PoliSci runz into TSA.
Or hoping to sneak it through perhaps?
A Standford professor forgets he has a grenade in his carry-on. Sure, prof.
“We had one we played with when I was a kid.” So did my siblings and I, but here’s the problem:
From the article:
“As it turns out, the grenade was still partially loaded and had the capability of doing harm.”
Maybe he was like the idiot weatherman from the movie Anchorman. I remember he brought a hand grenade to their news team rumble.
WWII memorabilia including rust encrusted “pineapples” are highly sought after collectables. He probably thought he could sneak it past customs and put it on eBay.
I can believe he had a grenade, but I’m very surprised the charges are already dropped. Some of those 800+ delayed fliers may wish to bring civil disturbance charges.
Yes, it is always best to put your live hand grenades into your checked baggage.
.
Oh, sure. I always forget about those hand grenades in my luggage, too. Darn things keep getting tangled with my stockings.

Was this the guy? He does look a little absent minded.
He just had to show proof of being an obama supporter and all is forgiven.
Could have ended worse, he could have pulled the pin to prove it was safe.

Obviously prepared for an audit.

Charges already dropped! ? You can be sure if it were you or me and we held up things because we “forgot” to check a handgun this self same prof would be screaming from the rafters for more gun control and how evil and dangerous guns are and how all gun owners are morons and how he wanted compensation for his lost time....
“Brick, where did you get the grenade?”
“I. Don’t. Know...”
