Joni Ernst parlayed her unusual support from establishment Republicans and conservatives to win Iowa's GOP Senate nomination outright on Tuesday, surpassing the 35% threshold needed to avoid a June 14 nominating convention, where nothing would have been guaranteed.
The Associated Press called the race after Ernst had 53.7% of the vote with just under 20% of the precincts reporting.
She will face Rep. Bruce Braley (D-IA), who won the Democratic nomination uncontested, to replace retiring Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA). Ernst will try to become the first female to be elected to federal office in Iowa.

Time to cut some pork!
How can you avoid a run off with 65% of the party against you? This is why we lose general elections!! Stay the hell home!!
Huh? She won 53% against several other candidates, one with a personal fortune to spend on ads. How does that pit 65% of the Iowa GOP against her?
I love good women in office and I love good vets in office...we need lots of both.....
? ? ?
I’d bet that Ted Cruz isn’t good enough for you.
With 93% of the votes in, Joni Ernst has 56%.
FR’s own Tom Hoefling came close to the much more well-known Sam Clovis’ vote total.
Make em squeal joni!!!!
They’re not mentioning him in any articles I’ve seen.
same race?
Is just more Demorat emotional "BULL_CRAP "
Hoefling opposed Gov. Branstad in the primary and wasn’t taken seriously.
Sam Clovis wan’t taken seriously in the Senate race either, but shined in the so-called debates.
I voted for both, and also for my neighbor Brad Zaun for US House.
No. Sorry for the confusion. See upthread.
