The crash occurred early Wednesday evening. Television reports show at least one home on fire on a residential street in Imperial, about 90 miles east of San Diego.
Lance Cpl. Christopher Johns, a Marine spokesman, says the jet was a Harrier from Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona, but he has no further details.

Isn’t that a vertical landing aircraft?
Seems strange that they would have a Lance Corporal as a spokesman.
I guess it did.
It is.

Just read that the pilot punched out and was taken to an area hospital. Praying for the pilot and that no one on the ground was hurt.
Went down about 1mile from my office. Warnings were sent out that live rounds were going off because of the intense heat from the fires and to stay away. Surprisingly I didn’t hear a sound until the fire engines went by.
After crash video already on Youtube:

Odinga has drummed a lot of Military out of the ranks.
Check for a fallout shelter underneath /obscure
OK, mandatory tension breaker out of the way .. prayers up for all involved.
Yep. You can land ‘em vertical, horizontal, or at an angle like a lawn dart.
Some methods are preferable over others.
I was just thinking that. Most likely, he was some motor mouth that wanted his 15 seconds. I can’t see anything less than a captain doing PR work.
Especially at an air wing which would be loaded with beaucoup brass.
Saying that when it crashed - was trying to be a bit funny when I said it came down the way it goes up. But then, if there was loss of life and property, not so much.
Hopefully everyone's o-k. We had a Marine pilot in a Harrier leaving the Quad City Air Show here one year at the Davenport airport that had some problems on takeoff. He didn't/couldn't punch out and died plowing a field with it.
Always sad to read about pilots getting killed doing what they like best. We always ask “I wonder what they did wrong?”
Wow. I used to live outside Imperial. And at the time I lived there, it was considerably smaller than 15,000.
