Women are having fewer kids, and demographers don't know why
Washington Examiner ^ | 6-7-2014 | Joseph Lawler

U.S. fertility is not recovering from the financial crisis — and demographers aren’t sure why.

The fertility rate fell to a record low 62.9 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2013, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

The total number of births, at 3.96 million, inched up by a mere 4,000 from 2012, the first increase since the financial crisis. But the total fertility rate, or TFR, the average number of children a woman would have during her child-bearing years, fell to just 1.86, the lowest rate in 27 years. TFR is considered the best metric of fertility. A TFR of 2.1 represents a stable population, with children replacing parents as they die off.

Fear, depression, uncertainty for future safety aren’t a fertility bonanza in the making.

I remember reading an article about the Great Depression and at the time 80% of Americans had some sort of farming skill. Today, when things totally collapse, I can’t see the new America taking care of itself.

Because kids like to do things like eat, wear clothes, and grow up.

If you don’t have the means, it can really cramp your style.

“There was an economic reason for families having a large number of kids in the past.”

That was the line pushed by the left to end large families. There is always a natural reason for families to have a large number of kids.

We are reaping the consequences of foregoing children; our country is unrecognizable from even 25 years ago.

Divorce and Family courts. Everybody knows somebody who has been dragged
through the vicious male-biased gutter of those two court systems.

When the MSM spews the demeaning trash about the White Male people tend to believe it.

Our government is living in a world of lies:

the recovery
Globull warming
the stimulus (government spending stimulates the economy)
people of the same sex can be married

Gee, lets import more illegals to make up the difference .../ S

Seriously, when your economy outlook is bleak or uncertain, having children is a major economic decision...

Couples with one or two children will not have anymore simply because they are pushed economically already...

Women are having fewer kids, and demographers don’t know why

Let me throw my own favorite reasons why into the pot...

In no particular order:

Cell Phones, aka Smart Phones, Have contributed to the loss of human social contact. I was at the county fair last night and most of the women, Young to about forty I would say, were on their phones constantly. And those that did happen to actually be with a boyfriend were splitting their time between him and the phone.

TV... Women and young children in the TV shows I have had the misfortune to see parts of are smart, witty and ‘oh-so-much-better’ than the men in the shows. Conclusion: Women don’t waste your time on these losers called men; stick with your own sex for better relationships and communication.

Computers: The virtual world of friends, (Facebook), is much more rewarding than the real world around you.

Economy: If you are actually working then you really don’t have much time left for (Smart-Phones, TV, Facebook). If you aren’t working and therefore living off of the taxpayer one way or another then you are to busy looking for a job, (Hopefully).

Otherwise you are in a low-level world where the only time you can really afford to go out and ‘do something’ is when the EBT card gets refilled and you can refill the pantry and the refrigerator. And of course there is always the Smart-phone, TV and Computer, if you have one, to occupy your time.

Bottom line is that there are way to many things to occupy the time of young women in a ‘first-world’ or technological society than having sex with a dedicated partner, (Husband). And besides... Kids take away the time they can devote to their favorite pastimes.

Disclaimer: There are always exceptions, thank God for that otherwise there would be no next generation.

Of course they know why. They are demographers, for crying out loud. We are headed the direction of Japan, Italy, and most post-industrial societies. We are nearing stage 5 of Demographic Transition. This is the true reason for the push for immigration/amnesty.

Agree whole heartedly agree with every point you made.

Permit me to suggest an additional cause:

Boys raised by women do not always learn how to be men.

Men become fathers, boys become baby daddies.

[[The correct headline should be “Productive and Responsible Women Having Less Children”]]

The correct headline is actually “Selfish and Materialistic Women are Having Fewer Children”

Wonder why. Could it be that they have to work to pay the confiscatory taxes that go to the non-working underclass “oppressed” ones who are having babies like rabbits?

I know it's really from a judgement against Babylon, but at least I will admit when I take something out of context...

Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless. 12I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold And mankind than the gold of Ophir. 13Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger.…

"My husband and I very much wanted and desperately tried to have children but I couldn’t. Are you telling me that God was punishing me for who we elected as President, back in the 80’s, i.e. Ronald Regan? Really?"

You are certainly welcome to read anything you like into my post, but, yu would be wrong in thinking that I was saying that God is punishing you individually for the crimes of a nation, it is not just you who is unable to have as many children as you would want, it is rampant nationwide, including my wife and I.

Read your Bible, starting in Genesis and see how God will deal with many if not all in a nation that has spit in His face.
