A new study that tested the willingness of drivers to stop for people depending on their race has shown up some disconcerting conclusions. Portland State University-based Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) had six men - three black and three white - of similar age and build and dressed in identical 'neutral' outfits cross the same street in Portland at separate intervals. The street had a crosswalk that was not governed by traffic lights, leaving the onus to stop with the driver, according to The Huffington Post. Trained observers watched the study out of sight from the traffic and recorded how the drivers reacted to each pedestrian.
Each man crossed 15 times each, allowing for 168 drivers to unwittingly be involved in the report. The study found that drivers were less likely to stop for the black pedestrians than they were the white ones. The observers noted that black pedestrians were passed by twice as many cars as the white pedestrians, and waited 32 percent longer to cross.

Maybe they should stop crossing the road after dark while wearing dark clothing. Listen, people, if you’re going to do that it would be a good idea to at least flash a smile.
That's what I was thinking, how may of the drivers who would not stop, were black?
Many blacks love to slow walk in front of white driver...many slow walk period
But they are undeniably harder to spot in street at nightnight

Women and minorities hit hardest.
Once an African American woman crossed the street in front of me while I was driving. I had the green light and she had the red light. But worse, she was also pushing a stroller with her infant baby in it. She even gave me that "taunt and dare" look. Unreal.
Maybe if autos had the right of way, there wouldn’t be this problem.
A couple of flat pedestrians with no recompense would stop this quickly.

We are not told how many black drivers were in the experiment.
Probably so. They need to tell the black folk to smile as they are crossing the road.
I think the truth is a little more obvious. If you imagine the driver of a vehicle, of whatever race; if a white man walks in front of their car, they are indifferent; but if a black man walks in front of their car, they are on edge in case the black man lashes out at their car or them.
There are mitigating factors as well. If the black man is well dressed, they are seen as almost a negligible threat, and if the white man is down-dressed to look poor, and maybe sporting tattoos, drivers will be far more attentive.
This is the problem with the stated “neutral dress”, because it is indeterminate of prosperity and thus character. From there the fall back is that the public believes that large numbers of black men are troublesome and often unemployed, so are a higher risk than are white men.
I will weep when the blacks stop the mobbing and knockout games.
I personally have a bit more trouble seeing black than white when I am driving and that includes pedestrians or cars.
The few times I make a bad error while driving is because I don’t see a black or dark grey car.
Why did the black man stand in the middle of the road?

Same thing happened to me years ago. I was driving down a two lane road when a black woman pulled out in front of me at a crossroads. I had the right-of-way, but I locked up the brakes. she looked straight ahead and never checked the road before pulling out.
