Both sides in the Scottish independence debate are marking the milestone of 100 days to go until the referendum vote.

First Minister Alex Salmond said the "credibility" of the pro-independence campaign would lead it to victory.

But the pro-UK Better Together campaign said the nationalists were "running out of time".

The referendum will be held on 18 September, with voters asked the Yes/No question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

What is the point? England heavily subsidizes them and they will still be part of the EUSSR so what benefit is “independence” anyway?

And if by some fluke we were to succeed in carrying off the trophy, the Union would surely be sunk.

Mr Salmond said he wanted the "best side" to win, adding: "I hope England do well."

I don’t think Scotland has a clue how messed up independence is going to be for them.

Like, defense for one thing.

Scotland is by far the most left wing region of the UK. If Scotland goes it’s own way, the labor party is essentially finished in the remainder of the UK.

An analogy would be if NY, NJ, RI, and VT were to be voting on independence from the rest of the US.

Wrong.
The Treasury borrows from the international money markets on behalf of the whole of the UK and then gives Scotland 9.3% (£64.5b from a UK total of around £693.5b in 2011/12) of that borrowing. However, Scotland contributes 9.9% (£56.9b from a UK total of around £574.7b) of the tax revenues to pay the debt back including around 3% compound interest. So Scotland (as part of the UK) has to pay relatively more to borrow than the rest of the UK (9.9% being a higher figure than 9.3%). Therefore, Scotland subsidised the UK (in 2011/12) to the tune of around £4.1b (9.9% of £693.5b=£68.6b).

This is a tough one. Scotland has been under UK’s boot since Wallace or thereabouts but the latest SNP folks are euro-eco-socialists who also happen to appeal to nationalism. Hate to feed the blue-greenies but Scotland should be independant. Maybe let um vote yes and then the latent caber-tossing types can sort out the lefties.

How independent would they be under the EU? What’s the point?
