This is like a really bad marriage where one spouse is addicted to crack, beats the other spouse weekly, leaves for months at a time, and has given the other spouse the clap on a couple of occasions.
You know, a marriage like that is beyond marital counseling sessions. Its not time to talk about what measures are needed for a reconciliation. It’s time to talk about divorce and the property settlement.

Still, senators were responsible to their legislatures for their votes and could ignore the pressure of media. The New Deal, anti-10th Amendment judges, the Great Society and Obamacare wouldn't have gotten out of committee with state appointed senators.
Besides, there was already a house of reps. What could be the purpose of another? The Framers would have puked at the idea of six year popular terms.

Don’t disagree with how the Founders would have felt about popular election of senators.
However, limited experience with state legislatures in three states makes me think they are if anything even more venal and corrupt than the Congress.
OTOH, I don’t have any real first-hand experience with Congress. :)
