What If Putin Threatens Us With War Over Alaska?
The Washington Post ^ | June 8, 2014 | By Will Baude

Posted on 06/09/2014 9:42:57 AM PDT by Strategy

This isn't related to the core enumerated powers questions in Bond but struck me as sufficiently interesting that it was worth posting about separately. In his post about Bond, Mark Tushnet writes:

This isn't Justice Thomas's problem but James Madison's [but] Justice Thomas quotes Madison to the effect that treaty cannot "dismember the empire." Really? Suppose Vladimir Putin lets the United States know that he's going to bomb the bejeezus out of the "red" states of the United States unless we negotiate a treaty returning Alaska to Russia. Work out the scenario as you wish, but I doubt that it's a good constitutional design to require the U.S. government to take the negotiating position, "We're fine with giving up Alaska but unfortunately we can't do it, so bomb away."

[ The Russians used to have a claim on San Francisco, too. I say we give it to ‘em. ]

I like this idea, Barry can say this is to fix the wrongs of American Colonilism and the the people that live there can start healing their own colons as the Russian policies the liberls hate so much can immediatly be applied...

Russia sold the Alaska Territory to the U.S. in 1867 by formal treaty (”Seward’s Folly”, it was called by those who thought Alaska worthless), so does Putin now simply abrogate a treaty that is even more valid now than it was during the Soviet era?

Or is “Red Dawn” about to happen for real? Do the Russians think our military is that demoralized?

Just what are the capabilities of today’s Russian Army? What is their order of battle? Seems Putin could not even make good on invading eastern Ukraine.

The Constitution provides for the common defense, not the partial abandonment.

The CONSTITUTION? Are you kidding? Where have you been, citizen?

Obama disobeys the Constitution every day, even as he talks about the importance of following "International Law." Well, at least we've got a Congress who keeps him in check. Oh wait. We don't.

Liberals don’t respect the Constitution. To them its a “living document” subject to revision.

[ The United States cannot surrender a state, even to someone who was not a tinpot, hollow threat like Vladimir Putin.

Bammy is not bound by the Constitution...

Also he could just keep the part of Alaska that border British Colombia and give the rest to the Ruskies....

Alaska could go from being our biggest states to one of the smallest states...

Well, for starters “the one” will wet his pants...after that, name calling, sanctions, and whining, OMG he will start whining...mostly the response will be un-American by nature.

Basically, I would love to play poker with the resident...since he can’t bluff and he has absolutely zero testicular fortitude it would literally be like taking candy from a baby.

It is a damn shame that this once great and powerful nation actually feel into the hands of such a rank amateur.

Good post. Obama, his globalist pals and the self-serving politicians in our so-called “congress” don’t give a damn about the U.S. Constitution. To them its nothing more than a quaint historical curiosity.

Ah, no problem. All Obemba has to do is to demand that Russia pay us off for all of the World War II debt that Russia owes us in ‘lend-lease’ and freebies that amounted to millions and millions of dollars after WWII, with interest. That’ll shut ol’ Putin up!

If Putin threatened Alaska, after Obama calls for a cease fire, Palin sends out the call for American Patriots to go to Alaska to fight back the Soviet horde.

Obama calls them traitors and requests Eric Holder arrest Palin for treason. Palin tells Obama where to stick it, Reid blames the Koch Brothers, Schumer goes on the Sunday shows and declares that if we had gun control this never would have happened. The following Monday, 10 are killed in an explosion at a local McDonalds. 2 of the 5 Taliban released takes responsibility.

If ubama ever did something truly that stupid.

There would be a revolution in this country and Sarah Palin herself would literally toss mr. Eunuch into Puget Sound.

And Putin.

I Blame out celebrity culture.

I am thinking we need to start doing “Howard Beele Flash Mobs” where one person stands up in a public place, gives a howard beele type speech and leaves.
