The Iraqi government says it has halted a militant group's advance on Baghdad.
As The Telegraph reports, the Iraqi army started engaging the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, after it made a rapid advance in which it captured the key city of Mosul.
"'Our security forces have regained the initiative,' said Maj Gen al-Moussawi, adding that the Iraqi army had won 'remarkable victories with the help of volunteers'. 'We will not stop at liberating Mosul from ISIS terrorists, but all other parts,' he continued."

That is correct.
Looks like their “new arsenal” is mostly a bunch of pickup trucks.
Thanks. I though5 5,000 was pretty small considering the area they had to cover and the numbers they faced. Well, 300 down, 11,700 to go.
It will be amazing if they can hold on to what they took. It's possible that they will face battles with Syria, Iraq, the Kurds and possibly even Iran now, with an occasional sprinkling of American air strikes.
US evacuates Baghdad embassy as brutal ISIS forces advance ... [Breaking!]

Breaking news update! Iraqis shut down internet at U.S. Embassy in Baghdad
"A three word text was released from inside the Embassy about six hours ago: Too late Alamo. That message is open to interpretation."
“Too Late Alamo.” These words are going to echo through what is left of American History.
O Drama should have made an attempt with Milieki to work toward a better solution than just pulling out. After a trillion dollars of restoration and reconstruction the base for success was there, and a decent election...there is nothing more we should do at this point.
What happens in the future will determine if we should do more than some air support/drones that co ordinates with Britain’s SOS intelligence that has volunteered to steer the Iraqi Army Generals to defeat the insurgency, if their fighters commit to win.
It all depends on what Valerie Jarrett told him to do. /s
There is so much Obama could have done so many times to stop a problem. He has consistently chosen the worst course of action. This seems to be no different.
I saw on Fox that Susan Rice was briefing him...Oh My.
Susan Rice briefing Obama - FACEPALM!
Aren't they in the desert? Why can't we just blow them up every time they move?
I would then expect to see large piles of dead militants,
Actually no, Obama and the UN would be calling for a
cease fire and dialogue...
If the GCC is involved, what is to keep them from invading Iraq from the south then turning east and taking out Iran. Why wait for Iran to have Nukes?
I’m not a rocket surgeon but.....
They don’t need to invade Iraq from the south. The goal apparently is to partition, to reorganize the geography along Islamic denominational lines, to undo the artificial lines drawn to create Syria and Iraq. The objective is being obtained by invading Iraq from the north.
Recall if you will, that initially there was a coalition including America, GCC, and Turkey supporting the opposition to Assad. The HQ was in Turkey, just over the Syrian border. Obama dropped out. What we are now seeing is the apparent solution developed by Turkey/GCC to the Syrian problem and the Sunni/Shia schism in Iraq.
By eliminating Assad’s Syria they have significantly contained Iran. Syria is the source of supply to Hamas and to Hezbollah. Then there is another and I must confess completely unimagined strategy, remove the Iraqi Sunni territory from Maliki/Shia control. In so doing, any strengthened relations between Maliki/Iran is weakened considerably.
I consider Turkey to be a very significant player in the current events. Like the GCC though they play their cards close and don’t announce in advance what they are doing.
Regarding the nucs, what we have seen is that the nuc program can be set back or seriously delayed by means other than bombing from the air. We don’t know who did it and don’t know what we don’t know about derailing the nuc program beyond what is in the news.
Then there is Egypt...... The Turkey/GCC coalition was not happy with the brotherhood..... they backed the Egyptian money interests and military and cleaned up the mess. They don’t seem likely to allow a similar uncontained situation to develop in the new Iraq/Syria area.
History is a process, not an event...... the process began with the extirmination of Saddam. We are witness to significant historical change
You have space doctor written all over you! ;D).
