TOPEKA, Kan. Even with tea party challenger Milton Wolf's feisty rhetoric and daily attacks, many Kansas Republicans saw U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts coasting to a comfortable victory in the state's Aug. 5 Republican primary.
But U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's stunning loss to an underfinanced and largely unknown primary challenger in his Virginia congressional district last week raised new questions about the certainty of a Roberts primary victory and how much an anti-Washington, anti-incumbent sentiment on the right could hurt him.
The three-term Republican incumbent's supporters contend there are significant differences between Roberts and Cantor, particularly the Kansan's tougher stance against creating a pathway to citizenship for immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Still, Wolf's backers are buoyed by the results in Virginia and believe Kansas is part of a larger political trend.
"One of the hardest things for an underdog to do is convince voters, donors and campaign workers that you can win," said Bob Beatty, a political scientist professor at Washburn University in Topeka. "It looks a little more possible after Cantor."
Wolf, a Leawood radiologist, has been campaign aggressively against Roberts since October and portraying the incumbent as a career politician who's lost touch with Kansas.

We live in A.C. times now - After Cantor
Roberts doesn’t even live here
good for you
the dude is just living it up in Virgina feeding at the taxpayer funded trough
Roberts has NOT lost touch with Kansans. I’ve heard that at least once a month, he e-mails all his big donors from that state.
Unfortunately the Cantor effect will not be visited upon Roberts. He is going to win (without my vote) and having escaped his deserved fate, will become even more distant and disconnected from his constituents.
It doesn't have to be that way. One thing Freepers were doing in the Cantor race was to repeatedly post that they were calling 5 or 10 friends and asking those friends to call 5 more. Sometimes just picking up the phone is a major help.
Milton Wolf is no Chris McDaniel.
And Pat Roberts is no Thad Cochran.
I can’t wait till cousin Milt rightly gets his butt kicked by conservative Senator Pat Roberts.
Absolutely the stupidest so called “tea party” challenge of the year (at least since Liz Cheney quit). Roberts is a conservative that doesn’t need to be replaced. Wolf is a random nobody who offers an inane rationale for voting for him. Everybody fixated on electing Wolf should be ashamed of themselves for falling for this circus act because some radio talk show host (Levin) says you should.
There’s a good candidate named Joe Carr running against Senator that SHOULD be replaced named Lamar! Alexander, that could use your attention instead.
I’m grassroots tea party and Wolf is not my candidate.
I agree! Pat Roberts has earned the conservative vote. Milton Wolf is a huckster and a fraud.
