The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Redskins' trademarks. The petitioners, consisting of five Native Americans, sought to cancel the trademarks based on a section of the Trademark Act that "prohibits registration of marks that may disparage persons or bring them into contempt or disrepute."

This idiotic rule could apply to the Yankees (northerners), Giants (large people), Reds (communists), Flames (homosexuals) and Senators (criminals).
I would think that Native Americans would be more offended by the Cowboys.

Lol! My husband LOVES this comment.
The Vikings too. I find that name offensive in the new climate.
oh, yeehaw.
Well if there was one thing cowboys were noted for fighting, it was... Indians.
Although there probably were a lot of cowboys who WERE Indians. The Old West could use any willing soul, and with its rigors it didn’t have time for the luxuries of racism.
Don’t forget Rebels. Cuz we all know that’s really racist, esp. at Ole Miss.
The Bill of Rights is dead.
Free Speech is dead: Try to speak your mind in acadamia nowaday!
Assembly is dead: Ask the Boy Scouts being forced to accept queer.
Private property is dead: Redskins is a great case in point.
The right to be free from illegal searches and seizures.
NSA
Kelo
it just goes on and on.
I'm thinking that the south was right as far as States Rights goes.
Perhaps rename them...
1. Washington Collective
2. Washington Cronies
3. Washington Usurpers
The KC Chiefs have an arrowhead with KC inside as a logo. Arrowheads are not an American Indian only thing and neither are chiefs.
This is just a test case.
If Obama & Co. manage this extreme, politically correct BS, expect the Chiefs, Blackhawks and Warriors to receive letters shortly after, along with many others.
This is `Nineteen Eighty-four’ in practice. Such things as “Redskins” offend Big Brother and the Uni-party Innner Members and, more importantly, it shows how they control us.
Recall that Orwell’s definition of “power”: the ability to make others suffer.
Not physical pain as such, as much as disgust and revulsion that these people, who have so much to do apparently feel they don’t have anything better to do than attack ... sports team symbols.
It comes straight from the White Hut, just one more outrage—the “change” they promised, whipping us into shape.
But Heavens ... let’s not talk about going after him, throwing-off the imposter with Articles of Impeachment for his numerous crimes and misdemeanors along with senseless nonsense such as this. The female half of the Uni-party, the GOP-e, would not approve.
It would be gauche.
“My FatherRestrain your feelings, and hear calmly what I shall say. I shall tell it to you plainly, I shall not speak with fear and trembling. I feel no fear. I have no cause to fear. I have never injured you, and innocence can feel no fear. I turn to all, red skins and white skins, and challenge an accusation against me.”
-Chief Black Thunder, 1815
I live in Oklahoma, and man are we in trouble!
The complaint says “Redskins” is derogatory. More specifically, it is that the word was understood to be derogatory at the time it was first recognized.
There are two problems with this: First, as a matter of fact, was Redskins understood to be derogatory at the time it was first recognized? If it was, why wasn’t a complaint registered at the time? In real time, when the Boston Braves changed its name to Boston Redskins, it was (a) to differentiate them from the Boston Braves baseball team, and (b) as recognizing that the head coach and several players were (or at least claimed to be) of Indian ancestry. So, it was a source of pride.
Second, to the extent that Redskins has an edge to it, like Celtics, Vikings, Pirates, Rebels and many other nicknames of the pro sports teams, this wasn’t derogatory either. It was an acknowledgement of the honorable opposition of various people to the encroachment of the greater community. We Americans respect Indians who resisted the expansion of the U.S. across the continent, including Tecumseh, Sitting Bull and Geronimo, even though we fought them.
The Black Hawks were named after the team founder’s WW I Army Batallion
Yeah, and that battalion was probably named after Chief Blackhawk.
This is simply a brutal effort to bludgeon people into submission.
disparaging name???
how about “cracker barrel”???
or “white castle”????
what about all the rap groups songs about white people??
go to hell, the whole stinkin lot of em..
If it comes to this, they could change their name to “Engines.”
But spell it “Injuns”, when it suits them.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
