Fatal shooting may have been accidental

PANAMA CITY — A new father is dead after what appeared to be an accidental shooting Tuesday night.

Steven Justin Ayers, 33, and his wife had gathered family members to celebrate the homecoming of their 3-day-old baby — born on Father’s Day. But the celebration at 2502 Michigan Court ended shortly after 6 p.m. when a stray bullet entered the home, struck Ayers in the back of the head and killed him instantly.

Moments earlier, Charles Edward Shisler, 62, had picked up a loaded 9mm pistol in his residence, adjacent to the Ayers’ home, and the gun discharged. Shisler was in his back yard at 3708 W. 25th St. when Bay County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived minutes after the shooting, according to arrest reports.

Stupid guns; always ‘magically’ just discharging as soon as some idiot touches one.

Investigators Wednesday morning were processing the trajectory of the bullet, which traveled more than 200 feet — through Shisler’s screen, an open window, about 60 feet of medium-density woods and then through the Ayers’ home — before striking Ayers.

Damn, when it's your time, it's your time.

Yea. As far as I am concerned there is no such thing as an "accidental shooting".
They are either, careless, reckless or born out of stupidity.

“tried to pick up the gun by its trigger”
Can you imagine a gun “going off” under those circumstances.
He was charged with felon in possession of a weapon, guess those background checks are keeping us safe.

Col. Coopers gun safety rules:
1. All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
3. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
4. Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

A drunk felon picking up his loaded illegal gun by the trigger is not an accident! It is negligent homicide and should have special circumstances. The author of the article is a moron, almost as big a moron as the felon.

I almost agree....but I witnessed 2 incidents that were accidental....one a dropped weapon that had its "safety" engaged and 0ne which was set off by a piece of brush as the hunter passed through....neither hurt anyone, but both dischaRGED THE WEAPOn

So, a 9mm went 200 ft and through a wall and killed a man? If true, hard to explain the conventional wisdom of a 9mm not having enough stopping power for self protection.

Actually, the article gives lots of information. I wish all articles gave as much.

As long as you hit the target in the back of the head.

Just asking...?
I’m an old lady, own a 9mm and hate the thing. Thinking there was an intruder in my house, I was so scared I never picked up the 9mm. In my fear, I couldn’t remember how to get it ready to shoot. My .38 in my friend, point and shoot.
Is it really possible to just pick up a 9mm and it accidentally fires?

“Damn, when it’s your time, it’s your time.”

Yes. Totally agreed. That is the sad moral of this story.

RIP unlucky man, at least you got to see the face of your child before your number came up.

There is, if it’s a Glock. That brand of pistol is cocked once a round is loaded and there is no external safety to keep it from being discharged. The closest there is to a safety is a mini trigger in the center of the trigger that has to be depressed to make the weapon fire. That ‘s why I have a Beretta.

I always remember what Brother Dave once said: "I don't believe in accidents. It's premeditated stupidity."

For those of tender years, Brother Dave was a night-club comic in the 1950s and 1960s.

The bullet entered the Ayers' house through a glass door.

I believe Uncle Sigmund saw it the same way.
