BAGHDAD (CBS News/CBSDC/AP) Islamic militants attacked Iraqs largest oil refinery late Tuesday, but were repelled by Iraqi security forces after an overnight battle, Iraqi officials said Wednesday.
The al Qaeda splinter group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) began their attack late Tuesday night, but fighting continued into Wednesday morning. There were unconfirmed reports that the militants had managed to gain control of much of the refinery compound, but in messages posted on their Facebook page, the Iraqi Special Operations force vehemently denied the claims.
Iraqi special forces, backed up by air support, destroyed an ISIS convoy and gunned down three ISIS snipers during a failed attempt by the group to break into the Baiji refinery, according to the special operations force, part of Iraqs Interior Ministry which is in charge of security across the country.

Good news, yes, but part of me sees anything that bolsters Obama’s pitiful foreign policy as ultimately being bad news for the World at large.
OK, so how many dead terrorists were in the convoy?
I wish that information had been posted. The article talks about three snipers who were killed. Maybe a future article will reveal more information.
Barry and albagore saddened.
Don’t disagree per se. Nontheless, I am not enthusiastic about another oil shock.
Which makes me recall a time in grade school where I decided not to complete an assignment that was due the following day. The next morning, to my pleasant surprise, the teacher did not collect the assignment.
This led me to feeling totally vindicated in my decision to not do my homework and I decided to try it again on occasion with less favorable results. This strategy did not serve me well in the rest of my school years or in life, for that matter.
This is how I see the Obama strategy, he sees every favorable result as a well-earned victory.
Do you have any idea of what will happen to the price of fuel if ISIS takes over Iraq's oil production?
I don't really feel like paying $7 for a gallon of gas just so that a pitiful president can look even more pitiful.
I can understand that in light of the disaster that has befallen Iraq, that the failure of ISIS to take a refinery would seem like a well earned victory to Obama. He's got to take what he can get. That's how losers think.
One of my favorite graphics.
Is “Baghdad Bob” back in the house?
To quote Scarlett O’Hara: “Tomorrow’s another day.”
This refinery is in Sunni territory. It will fall or be destroyed.
The claims of the Maliki Government have yet to be verified. If the Maliki Government doesn’t have a replacement Baghdad Bob, it can count on Obama for a loaner.
My assumption is also that if ISIS cannot take and hold the refinery, it will do its best to destroy it.
I hope these punks know they’re little acronym is already claimed by an “infidel” goddess.
Did he really do this?
The Goddess ISIS.
—Also got the damn Bob Dylan stuck in my head—
Wow, she was a looker.
I know man, no matter how horrible they are I just can’t get past their poor branding!
Man, that pic just cracks me up!
#3> Heads. We want to see heads, arms, legs, balls. Then we do a body count. Give the Iraqis a cell phone with a camera in it. Real-time pics. Love it.
