Texas Gov. Rick Perry needled GOP Sen. Ted Cruz, saying he was skeptical a “junior senator” could have made a big difference in state politics.
“Texas is pretty big; it’s pretty diverse; the legislature is a microcosm of the state, so I’m not sure one person has the ability to change all that,” Perry, a Republican, told reporters at a Thursday lunch hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.
Perry, who openly acknowledges he is mulling a presidential bid in 2016, has often been on the opposite side of Cruz in local politics. In 2012, Cruz defeated Perry’s endorsed candidate, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, in a runoff for the Senate.
This cycle, Cruz— who is also considering a 2016 bid — has largely stayed out of federal elections, with a couple exceptions. But Cruz has played in some of the state elections in Texas, including endorsing state Sen. Dan Patrick over Dewhurst’s re-election earlier this year.
“We all get our 15 seconds of fame, right,” Perry said. “Whether it was Ann Richards, or whether it was George W. Bush or whether it was Rick Perry or whether it was Ted Cruz. Long term, I think it requires somebody with substantial staying power to make a long-term difference in Texas.
“The idea that a personality in the political arena can change Texas may be a little bit outside the realm of reality,” he continued. “Ask me in eight years if Sen. Cruz has made an impact on the state. At this particular point in time, it’s a little early to say that a junior senator would have substantively changed the state.”

In a race of support between a Rick Perry and a Ted Cruz, Rick Perry loses hands down in my book. He’d better come to Jesus on that before he’s standing out by the woodpile in my opinion.

Cruz graduated cum laude from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in 1992.[2][7] While at Princeton, he competed for the American Whig-Cliosophic Society’s Debate Panel and won the top speaker award at both the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debating Championship.[33] In 1992, he was named U.S. National Speaker of the Year and Team of the Year (with his debate partner, David Panton).[33] Cruz was also a semi-finalist at the 1995 World Universities Debating Championship, making him Princeton’s highest-ranked debater at the championship.[34][35] Princeton’s debate team later named their annual novice championship after Cruz.[34]
Cruz’s senior thesis on the separation of powers, titled “Clipping the Wings of Angels,” draws its inspiration from a passage attributed to President James Madison: “If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.” Cruz argued that the drafters of the Constitution intended to protect the rights of their constituents, and the last two items in the Bill of Rights offered an explicit stop against an all-powerful state. Cruz wrote: “They simply do so from different directions. The Tenth stops new powers, and the Ninth fortifies all other rights, or non-powers.”[31][36]
After graduating from Princeton, Cruz attended Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1995 with a Juris Doctor degree.[2][37] While at Harvard Law, Cruz was a primary editor of the Harvard Law Review, and executive editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, and a founding editor of the Harvard Latino Law Review.[7] Referring to Cruz’s time as a student at Harvard Law, Professor Alan Dershowitz said, “Cruz was off-the-charts brilliant.”[19][38][39][40][41][42] At Harvard Law, Cruz was a John M. Olin Fellow in Law and Economics.[43]
Cruz currently serves on the Board of Advisors of the Texas Review of Law and Politics.[43][44]

Exactly. We all knew they would have to start butting heads a little at some point.
Frankly I think they are two good guys and look forward to seeing both of them run for President in 2016.
IMO we need both of them running to keep Jeb, Crispy and Mitt from getting traction.

Rick is NOT my first choice. Maybe my second, maybe third. But I would WELCOME him in the race
Point is, if we had Perry, Cruz, Jindal, Walker, West, Palin, hell even (maybe) Paul all running - with no RINO’s - would that be the best possible field in many, many years?
Perry is one of the few Republicans (along with Krispy Kreme, Romney, etc) who is an automatic non-starter for me in the 2016 nomination race.
He had his chance in 2012, and could have been a better candidate than Romney was. But he completely blew it through amateurish, not ready for prime time behavior. Which, if current events are any indication, he’s failed to learn and grow from.
