Santa Ana police announced the arrest of a man they say assaulted officers with marbles fired from a slingshot.
KCAL9′s Stacey Butler says the accused has been identified as 37-year-old Hector Luis Perez of Santa Ana.
Perez was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer as well as vandalism.
Authorities said that around 10:45 p.m. Thursday, officers conducted a felony car stop in the 1700 block of West First Street.
They said Perez, who had no involvement in the stop, started hurling glass marbles in the officers direction with a slingshot.
Authorities said no officers were struck but that one marbles hit the rear window of a patrol car and caused it to shatter.
It was dark and officers had no idea what had struck their vehicle until they got help from above.
The Orange County Sheriffs Department helicopter known as Duke came in to investigate, and three men were located, all hiding in a shed. Reviewing in-flight video, officials determined Perez was the marble shooter.
Butler showed the dramatic video police watched to identify Perez.
Zoom in on him. We need to I.D. him. Yep. Got him, an officer said.
Without the helicopter we never have found this guy, Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
If one of the officers had been hit with one of those marbles it shattered a rear window what would it have done if it hit an officer in the head? Bertagna asked.
As opposed to "metal" marbles (aka "ball bearings")?
Guess they didn’t want the Malibu rocket scientists to think it was the Elgin Marbles.
When marbles are outlawed, only outlaws will have marbles.
I guess it was the more common cats-eye marbles rather than the fancier aggies.
So now a marble is a deadly weapon. Will more kids get shot as a result?
When I was a kid there was a neighbor next door who was a few years older and was absolutely deadly with his slingshot and glass marbles. Rabbits never had a chance. I have a wrist rocket with steel shot but I mostly just scare the squirrels with it.
Anybody else remember Ernest T. Bass?
We must have more common sense Slingshot Control laws now before it is too late !!!
Entire Class Expelled For Making Slingshot Signs With Fingers.
“So now a marble is a deadly weapon.”
Can be, yes, most certainly.
“Rocking,” throwing a rock by hand, can cause serious injury and death, and as you are probably aware, is an execution method in some parts of the world.
Rocking is also favorite tactic used by illegal aliens against our Boarder Patrol Agents.
When rocked, Border Patrol Agents fire back because rocking IS deadly force.

I don’t think you want the Border Patrol or police not to fire back when faced with lethal rocking or being fired on by a sling-shot, especially in this case where the marble shattered the rear windshield, meaning it would have caused serious injury and possibly death if it hit the guy.
So, yes, a marble CAN be a deadly weapon.

"It's because I'm black, isn't it ?"
Yep!
And it was BLACK!
Hector Luis Perez.
Sounds like a good Irish name.....
Just a case of History ‘repeating’ itself.
DAVID v GOLIATH.
When a projectile is hurled at high velocity from a slingshot, especially a hunting sling shot? Yeah a a marble is deadly weapon?projectile. Though I am pretty sure they were talking about the sling shot being the deadly weapon.
I’m just thinking of all the silly places this can be pushed.
Ok. Cheers.
