One-on-one with Rick Perry (part one)

It seemed like one of those movies with twin brothers played by the same actor, one with glasses and one without. There is the brash, undisciplined one and the nerdy, engaging one. In my case it wasn’t a movie but a 45-minute interview with Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

I was a tough critic of his performance in 2012, but so is he. He told me, “2011-12 was a frustrating, painful, humbling experience but not a bad one in the sense we sometimes learn the most when we are humbled.” He said one lesson is that you have to be physically fit for the presidential campaign grind. “Running six weeks after back surgery was a mistake,” he said flatly. He also made clear how much preparation is needed. He called a presidential campaign “one of the most difficult experiences. Even if I ran for governor four times, that is not enough to really prepare you.”

Are Cornyn and Rick Perry the only candidates who take Rubin seriously?

It's amazing how many out-of-staters want him to run, when half the in-state delegation here on FR would give him a gracious pass.

Unless pressed, and then we'd give him a 'get out!' kind of pass.

No, Rick Perry is much too good a staunch conservative Republican, much too successful as a governor, to turn out to pasture. He like all of us has some flaws, but I would trust him as POTUS without question.

Those candidates coming out Congress may be solid conservative Republicans but I don’t know of any who could take the reins of this massive government without having first handled a state government - and done it as well as Perry.

There are three things I don’t really like about Rick Perry.

I don’t remember what they are.

But bottomline: I ain’t voting for him.

You ain't from Texas, are you?

Texas governor is the weakest in the Union. By design. He can't even pardon criminals without permission from a board.

About the only thing a governor can do is sign legislation, call out the State guard, and run his yap.

Most powerful political position in the State of Texas is Lt. Governor.

He runs stuff.

Nope. I won't vote for Perry for anything. Ever.

He's a liberal, just like Dewhurst was, and we just fired Dewhurst.

I think Perry is trying to position himself to be appointed to head some agency when
the new President takes office. He’s associating himself with potential candidates
in an effort to be known to the victor. JMO.

And he endorsed Dewhurst instead of Cruz. If Perry had his way Cruz would never have made it to Washington. That's just one way that Rick Perry has proven he is no conservative. The list is long, of course.

I'll do a brief, un-noticed mea culpa here... When Gov Perry was running for re-election, 3rd ex and I had a difference of opinion about him. That was about Gardasil time, and she had a 12 year old daughter.

She was right. I was wrong. Perry was a bad idea for Texas.

I'll never speak of that again.

I was an idiot once. I supported Perry. I grew up, and grew out of that idiocy.

I'm making amends.

Satisfied?

If Rick Perry had been running a good campaign, that slip of the tongue wouldn’t have mattered.

I voted for McCain once. We all have youthful indiscretions. My purity isn’t pure either. We learned the hard way. Some refuse to.

Now if we can get South to admit his vote For Jessie in 84 we’ll all have our cards on the table ;)

Uh-oh. Once a columnist at the wapo starts singing a candidates praises, you know it’s someone you should take a pass on.

I’m sure Gov. Perry is a nice guy, has studied hard, and has perfected his steely Darryl Issa stare. But what does he bring to the table other than a Texas drivers license? The TX governor is by design a potted plant position.

Sorry. Rick Perry just seems like Willard Romney with a Texas drawl.
