Conservatives can be forgiven for believing the political winds are at their back. Obama is flirting with historically low approval ratings as much of the public simply tunes him out. Democrat-backed policies have failed to lift the economy and public anxiety about the limits of government activism grows. Conservative challengers will do well enough this primary season to argue that the "tea party" is alive and well. Behind the scenes, though, the left is retooling and the conservative movement seems unequal to the challenge.
The upcoming edition of The Nation, the long-time house-organ of the institutional left, features a "symposium" with insights from leading organizers on ways to rebuild a progressive, populist political movement. The cornerstone of this effort is an astute, yet arguable, observation about the modern political landscape.
The sad irony of American politics is that the right is far weaker than it appears and the left far stronger than it asserts.
There is some truth in this, but not for the reasons the author, Peter Borosage, probably imagines. The American right is far weaker than it ought to be, given Americans' views on most issues. According to exit polls, a majority of voters in an election in which Barack Obama won a second term also believed that government was "doing too much." Just about one-in-four voters who voted in 2012 described themselves as "liberal."(continued)

Actually the right is far stronger. Its just that most of us are trying to earn a living and don’t want to tell everyone else how to live their life.
The left is living on our taxes and has time on their hands.
I would say throwing open the southern border of the United States to the entire population of Latin America is “total war.”
There is a problem however.
Our side has a segment, along with a segment on the other side, who really don’t care about jobs in America.
That group has sent a huge amount of formerly American jobs, to China and to other countries.
Nobody talks about that. We run a (massive) trade deficit currently with China. Have for a number of years.
That is not helping America.
Ironically, that may even be helping democrats. We need to recognize, that jobs in China do not help America.
They just don’t.
The thing is, nobody is willing to bring them back. Not our side. Not the other side.
Nobody.
Oh cmon, were gonna get rich by sending all our money to someone else. /s
Exactly.
The huge problem is, there is so much money to be made by sending American factories to China, even if it means sending actual ownership of the factories overseas, that (nobody) in either party is at all willing to talk about this.
Nobody. This is a growing problem for America.
I know, nobody wants to talk about it, but China is about to take the lead, and become the largest market in the entire world.
And we’ll still be importing tons of stuff from there, and not exporting stuff there.
Long-term, that is a policy of economic suicide.
Just saying. People are making a lot of money right now, by selling out America.
But they are selling out America.
We need to bring back jobs.
Bring them right back here to the United States.
Ultimately its demons versus God. It should be a cakewalk for the God side, but how much time do they really spend praying moment by moment... any time a lefty has his irish up, it is worship for the demons.
Until, of course, you run out of customers.
Yes, and we’ll make it up in volume!
Well I think I see your point, but the way things are going, we are going to run out of customers because America will spend all our money and simply go broke.
Broke.
Then what? America, without industry, and broke.
If we’re going to run out of customers anyway eventually, why do we also want to send away our industry?
Sending everything to China isn’t a good long-term strategy.
A whole lot of fortunes were made because China was so hugely cheaper in every way.
China is still operating at a (huge) advantage.
I’m just saying, America needs to change our strategy toward China.
China is starting to challenge America.
We need to compete with China.
Compete.
>> the left is retooling
Consider what Cochran and the GOP-e are now doing to the primaries. The GOP-e is part of the Left’s retooling effort.
If pushed to that kind of fate, it will end up with money worth next to nothing and will have to either scrape by domestically or starve.
Nope.
Who are you referring to?
China? Or America?
China is a manufacturing giant. Second only to America, and rapidly advancing toward the lead.
We run a (massive) budget deficit. We are currently something like 17.5 trillion in debt, and that is rapidly growing.
We import so much, much of it from China. We import something like 440 billion from China in a year, yet we only export something like 122 billion back to China.
So every single year, we ship what, 318 billion more dollars to China.
And neither party, says a single word.
The USA. It kind of comes back to bite us in the rear if we are too gluttonous of foreign product.
Exactly.
Right now, China and America are just about equal.
All I am saying is, we need to start thinking about how things need to work, to keep America just about equal with China. I do not see that being calculated, I only see everyone selling out as fast as they possibly can.
What I see right now, is just a massive sell-out to China. In every issue, in every market, in every way.
We need to start thinking about standing up for America.
I would like the GOP to do that.
Unfortunately, I don’t see even a small hint, of the GOP being in any way responsive to America’s needs.
The democrats haven’t done anything (yet) but we must not wait until they act, or America is well and truly ... well you know.
China is rapidly growing.
China is challenging America.
We cannot simply continue to sell out ever more American industry to our primary competitor.
That just is not sustainable. America needs to compete.
As a nation. We need to compete.
“Then what? America, without industry, and broke.”
This gets to the true heart of the matter. We constitutional conservatives see America as an exceptional nation whose interests should be pursued by its political and business leaders.
The ultimate goal of the Progressive Left is a one-world government where the United States is just a backwater, home to a few rich elites and a lot of cheap labor and resources.
We fret over a growing federal government and our jobs going to China when we should be worried about the complete loss of our national sovereignty and our country’s wealth and land becoming nothing more than collateral for the great Chinese pawn-shop.
China isn’t managed as well as the USA, though. That has to hurt its total productivity. What happens when the Chinese workforce really is maxed out?
“Actually the right is far stronger. Its just that most of us are trying to earn a living and dont want to tell everyone else how to live their life. The left is living on our taxes and has time on their hands.”
The right isn’t unified, while the left has a natural advantage in reaching out to millions of newly-impoverished Americans with an appeal to lay their misery at the feet of wealthy whites. Mitt Romney was beaten by that strategy, and the number of poor whites has swelled since then.
