On Monday, the Obama administration hosted its very first White House Summit on Working Families to spotlight ways to help working parents balance their family lives with their careers and makings ends meet.
Along with the Department of Labor and the Center for American Progress, the White House presented multiple panel discussions with top administration officials, business leaders and lawmakers who spoke about issues like equal pay, paid sick leave and flexibility in the workplace. The summit also included breakout sessions with activists on compensation, young women's leadership, and caregiving.
During his speech, President Obama declared that paid family leave and affordable childcare "are not frills, these are basic needs," reports MSNBC.
He went on to say that all "too often these issues are thought of as women's issues, which I guess means you can kind of scoot them aside a little bit. Anything that makes life harder for women, makes life harder for families, and makes life harder for children."
He added that the United States is the only first world country that lacks mandated paid maternity leave.
"We talk about the glass ceiling but you know what, it is the sticky floor that is the problem for so many minimum wage workers," said senior White House advisor Valerie Jarrett during her opening remarks.
In the opening plenary, Jill Biden addressed the issue of mothers who care for children at the same time as caring for elderly parents.
At the summit, Vice President Joe Biden talked about how his female policy staffers motivated him to pass legislation that offered women flexibility to care for their families. "They're the reason I was able to write the domestic violence law in the first place," he said, referring to his signature legislation while in the Senate, the Violence Against Women Act.
"You cannot talk about opportunity for women, without talking about violence against them, the domestic violence," said Biden.
"Mad Men" star Christina Hendricks also spoke at the conference about her role on the popular political TV series as a single mother. "She has faced discrimination in every aspect of her job, simply because she's a woman ... The only place for a story like Joan's should be on TV."
This tripe really annoys me. Women are much smarter and can handle much more than this administration or Hollywood think we can.

Working families ? What is that?
A “working family” to this administration is one that actively endeavors to apply for and retain: EBT that consolidates TANF and SNAP, EITC, Section 8, ObamaPhone, water/power/gas assistance, educational grants for diploma mills, SSDI, SSI and any other number of the over 85 State and Federal welfare programs.
Every day its a new idea for big govt while Obama hasn’t done nada about the VA crisis. He lives in a bubble surrounded by yes men.
And what’s worse he has yet to meet with the families of soldiers who died rescuing Bergdhal but he meets with his fanclub! Just disgusting.
Women obviously need to make better decisions and stop blaming all their problems on men.
This from the man who claimed to be focused like a laser on jobs 6 years ago.

what are these, train the trainer seminars to get activists prepared to goout into the community and sell it? Cuz that's what it sounds like.
