CHICAGO (CBS) – Chicago Public Schools officials have sent layoff notices to 550 teachers and 600 clerical support staff, but said the teachers will be able to apply for other open jobs with the district for next school year.

The district said the teacher layoffs were the result of enrollment declines at some schools, though CPS has not identified which ones.

However, the district said it expects to have approximately 1,780 vacant teaching slots for next school year, and teachers who received layoff notices can apply for those positions. Approximately 1,400 of the open slots are for full-time teaching positions.

“On average, more than 60 percent of displaced teachers have historically found positions elsewhere in the District...

All all those Chicago and Illinois NEA types were marching up there in Madison, WI. a few years ago against Gov Walker.
Winds up no layoffs of teachers in WI. thanks to Walker but now the rotgut economic policies in IL. will force teacher layoffs. Sweet irony isn’t it?

Cutting CTU President’s Karen Lewis’ per diem for food by 20% could have saved half those jobs....

I know some school districts here in California sent out layoff notices every year to teachers. Had to be done by April 15. Come September most were hired back.

meanwhile in evil wisconsin no teachers have been let go because of act 10. none under act 10 have quit their still-lucrative jobs either.

the few places like milwaukee and a few other areas wo signed contracts before act 10 was in effect, or on hold by legal challenges, have laid off teachers.

Might be done to avoid granting tenure, or required if they are not yet tenured. Someone told me that untenured teachers can collect unemployment over the summer (as if they were in fact laid off); if so, then requiring advance notice might be the same as that required of other large employers.

This raises the question: How many administration types were laid off?

Multiply those numbers by ten and they’ll have a pretty good start. CPS and the CTU are nothing more than organized criminal gangs committing the largest act of child abuse in American history.
