SALT LAKE CITY — Eight LDS missionaries serving in the Salt Lake City East Mission and their leaders are working with the Forest Service to remove a flagpole that the missionaries cemented to the top of Mount Olympus earlier this week.
Hikers discovered the flagpole with a U.S. Flag and an autographed mission T-shirt on Forest Service lands and alerted rangers. The Forest Service confirmed that posting the flagpole was indeed breaking the law.
“You would need to get a permit to put up a flagpole. In wilderness it wouldn’t be allowed at all,” said Kathy Jo Pollock of Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
Jessica Moody, a spokeswoman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said the missionaries were responsible for the placement of the flagpole, and that Salt Lake City East Mission is “looking into this and will address it appropriately.”
Mount Olympus’s wilderness designation means no mechanized equipment or permanent improvements are allowed to be put there, not even patriotic displays or memorials.

You follow the rules. Conservatives have great respect for the law for good reason. You just don’t get to say, “oh gee. I’m patriotic. I’ll plant a flag here!”
No. They shouldn’t have done it. And while I would place this, as a Prosecutor, in the “continue and dismiss” category, some chains need to be yanked.
Private individuals should not go around erecting structures on land owned by the public whenever they choose.
Diverting public land for private use is just as wrong as the government taking private land for public use.

I think that it’s the duty of Christians to erect crosses and patriots to put up flags.
And it’s the duty of the Godless communists to take them down and persecute us for it.
We have done our duty to God and country when we put up the cross or the flag and we should be joyous that we did it. After our act is completed, the symbol is meaningless anyway. Don’t worry about what they do afterwards. Their reward is on earth and ours is in heaven.

Just put them up on your own land.
I’m just thankful the Forest Service is protecting me — and the wilderness — from the rampaging hordes of flagpole-planters marauding through our pristine parks.
If so, then why is a flagpole on top of a mountain acceptable and a cross on top of a mass grave not?

...and on the subject in question, I’m sure you already know the flag and flagpole have been removed by subjects unknown. Unfortunately the concrete remains but more than likely the original suspects will have to take care of that as part of their punishment for patriotism.
All along, the only item not allowed in designated wilderness areas, was motorized anything! (Motor cycles, four wheelers, autos, chain saws, etc.)
I get that it’s public land, and they shouldn’t just build whatever they want on it... but it’s an American flag on a mountaintop, what’s the big deal? It’s not as if they put a Cuban flag up there or something.

Thought one of the pillars of Mormonism was obedience to the government.
Fine, put them on your property. They don't belong in wild areas that you don't own.

I’m surprised they didn’t leave the pole and hoist the U.N. flag. Aren’t all our parks and waterways controlled by them already?
I say hoorah for these Mormon kids who packed bags of concrete up to the top of a mountain to fly OUR flag!!
The rule has always been “take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints.”
I just got back from a wilderness trip. It’s designated wilderness for a reason. There are plenty of other vast spaces suitable for “many uses,” such as National Forests and BLM areas.
Just curious what would happen if a bunch Muzzies tried to erect something there whether the FedGov would be up in arms.
