Barnes & Noble Inc. BKS +0.60% is to split in two, separating its unprofitable Nook digital business from its consumer bookstores, an acknowledgment of the difficulties the retailer faces in competing with bigger companies like Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.34% in the e-book and hardware sector.
The split, expected to occur by March, will make Nook Media a separate public company housing both Barnes & Noble's Nook e-book and e-reader business as well as its college stores. Among Nook Media's big shareholders will be Microsoft Corp. MSFT +1.27% and Pearson PSON.LN 0.00% PLC, both of which have invested in the Nook Media division but don't have a stake in the broader company.

Ebooks are SO over priced.
Every time I try to search "books" on B&N, up comes the stupid "nook".

I tried electronic readers for about a year and a half, then I went back to books.
Barnes & Noble is more of a toy store than anything else these days. Of course, the Union Square store pictured here is OK but those suburban stores! Awful!
I love my Kindle too...
Best sellers are and “big” authors, but I have signed up for emails daily for very low cost or free books and have found a lot of very good authors that way.
Some aren’t good, but when they’re free, no big deal, delete them. Others are so good that I will read others by the same author, which is what they want when they put them for free or $0.99.
I used to spend a lot of money on real books, the cost to read has changed drastically since I found the low cost books. I still buy my favorite authors’ works, but it balances out with the cheap ones. Except recently a favorite of mine had a new book come out and the e-book price was $14.44. NO WAY.
Not good news for B&N. My oldest son worked for their college division up until a year ago and told me that their business strategy circa 2010 was re-organizing the company around the Nook.

Amazing the head starts that BN and Borders had over Amazon. Yet, geniuosly Bezos knew that books were the one product consumers did not need to feel and test out.
I still use my local library to sample books before buying them online. You can also borrow most of the best sellers at the library and determine for yourself if it is worth buying an e-book version. I don't mind paying full price for an e-book if I know I will like it.
I used to think there would always be a market for hardbound books but the e-book format is so convenient that I can't imagine every buying a traditional book again.
What I miss is book stores. There is not one less than 45 minutes of here. Going through choices online is just not the same as going through a bookstore and finding something unexpected.
Perhaps a B&N devoted to real inventory will begin identifying areas underserved by bookstores...we can only hope.
I have two nook hd+9s and they are great.
But no monthly fees like my overpriced iphone, landline, cable tv, etc etc
