American mayors have tools available to them to combat neighborhood gentrification that forces poorer people out of their communities, the leaders of four cities said at an Essence Festival panel discussion Saturday.
“The way to avoid displacement is to focus your will and stop letting mayors off the hook with this gobbledygook acting like they don’t know what’s going on,” Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said during the “Our Cities Our Solutions” panel discussion at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Yep. This reminds me of professional racist Spike Lee last year blasting whites moving into his old Brooklyn neighborhood, yet where does he live now? On Park avenue which is about as white as you can get.
So we need to combat “gentrification”? Mayors should fight against this happening?
As I understand it, gentrification happens when private investors take the investment risk, of going into rundown areas, and revitalizing those areas. Slum areas have been revitalized through the process of gentrification. Small businesses find new business opportunities. Crime goes down, and homeowners move into these areas. All sorts of good things happen from gentrification. At risk of being politically incorrect, a better class of people move in. Arguably, these are new tax paying residents, who are now paying taxes in these cities.
Yes, some people are displaced through gentrification. But what is our alternative? Do big city mayors really want to make it so arduous for investors and developers, that these slums simply stay slums? And why would we want to do that? To make Spike Lee happy that we’re honoring the history of the ghetto and all that??? Really????
I think Spike Lee should set up a museum dedicated to the ghetto in a place such as Bedford-Stuyvesant. Set up a museum which will tell the history of the neighborhood.
If he wants to preserve that ghetto spirit so much, preserve it in a museum, so he can teach everyone how wonderful Bedford-Stuyvesant was, before private investors saw potential there, and decided to take the investment risk to try to transform such an area.
There was a story here recently, about Portland. Black activists in Portland protested against a proposed Trader Joe’s store being located in a re-developing area. They were making statements about what types of people go to Trader Joe’s and what changes they feared, if a place such as Trader Joe’s opened in their community.
It was really amazing to hear such reactions. If the races were reversed, it would have been considered blatantly racist to hear what they said about certain types of people and retailers moving into their area. But since it was blacks wanting to preserve a ghetto, it’s all okay.
In Houston the real estate developers pwn the city.
Allegedly even former mayor Lee P-period Brown said that all homes under $250,000 need to be razed since they “cost the city money” (don’t provide enough real estate taxes).
Their “ruining the property values” on Bizarro World apparently.
I suspect it isn’t the money, it’s the skin color they resent.
How dare do they want to replace slums with safe neighborhoods.
If you like your ghetto, you can keep your ghetto. Period.
It’s crazy too, because these activists have decried “white flight” over the past decades, and “disinvestment” in cities, which have caused so many places to do downhill.
They opposed the actions which caused the inner cities to get to their current state, yet are also opposed to actions which would revitalize such areas.
You can’t have it both ways.
But, if these mayors fight too much against the private capital which they can benefit from, the investors will simply go elsewhere, and leave inner city Baltimore, New Orleans, Atlanta, et. al. in the same horrid conditions they are now.
And if that happens, I’m sure they will blame the investors for avoiding their cities, avoiding based on policies they themselves want to put in place to make it more difficult for these investors to do what they do.
Ironic that this is being discussed in New Orleans. I promise you the Essence crowd isn`t enjoying the ambience of the Lower Ninth Ward or any of the un_gentrified ghettoes of the city. Not if they value their lives and certainly not at night. And those trying to gentrify the Marigny and Bywater are being welcomed by crime-assault,robbery and theft on a daily basis. Slow learners.

Which is probably the reason a ‘Chocolate’ city is a Sh*ty city, - Detoilet, Michigan being the obvious example.
If the white kids move into the black 'hoods, they won't have to be punitively bussed, so how can blacks punish whitey, then?
Corporate welfare: the poorer the city, the more the money flowing into city hall from FedGov and the State, into the hands of the abministrators to provide raises and work to connected ones, and themselves. In return, the municipalities support the State and Fed administrations that approve of the scheme, and send the dough.
TRANSLATION: “We must preserve the ghetto.”
