A Gresham man is charged with attempted murder after he fired on a group of people leaving a party Friday night, only to be shot himself by one of the victims, a military service member with a concealed carry permit, authorities said Sunday.
The military member and three others were leaving a party Friday night in the 11700 block of South Union Avenue in West Pullman, Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Hain said in Cook County Bond Court.
One of the victims noticed a cup of liquor on top of her vehicle and asked attendees of a party next door who it belonged to, Hain said.
When she removed it, Denzel A. Mickiel approached her, shouting obscenities and threatening her and her friends, according to Hain and court records.
Mickiel, 22, went into the residence, returned with a gun and began firing at the group, she said.

Right in the center - between I-57 and I-94 — just drop up through 94 this morning...I guess this would be considered part of the south side of Chicago...good thing the military member remembered his tactics - took cover - returned fire and was able to get those he was with out of there...
geez...someone abuses someones elses car - gets called out on it - and is the response from the animals — come out and start shooting...what did he think was going to happen? Good thing that IL has concealed carry now...could have been several homicides over a cup on a car!
I’m just curious why they only used the last name of the attacker “Mikiel” instead of DENZEL Mikiel.....

These punks are just spoiling for a reason to pull a weapon and open fire, about time one of em got a little bit of what he was dishing out.

There were two others in Mickiel’s group who were shooting too. The soldier showed good presence of mind and tactics.

I could see this becoming a more common occurrence, to the point where the custom of firing random shots into groups of people over minor perceived offences becomes much less fashionable.
One correction for the firearms illiterates in the press: A car fender is concealment and a good shooting rest at best but not "cover".
