With students running a higher risk of obesity and hunger during their summer break, Prince George’s County schools have joined an effort to provide the youngsters with free breakfast and lunch.

More than 60 schools throughout the county will serve the meals until Aug. 1.

“Providing continuous meals throughout the summer helps children receive the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow,” Kevin M. Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer for Prince George’s County Public Schools said in a statement.

What is interesting is that even though the kiddies are grubbin’ 2 meals a day @ la escuela, the family EBT amount is not reduced.

“These are not schools. They do not educate. They are taxpayer funded centers that provide paychecks for little if any work and a place for young people to hang out and get free stuff.”

They are welfare pastures.

feeding the kids breakfast bars, eggo pancakes, chocolate chip bars, baloney sandwiches and turkey corn dogs during the summer helps prevent obesity?

I guess food stamps are supposed to be used for manicures and cell phones. /S

In a few weeks, the Walmart stores in my area will have people stationed outside the entrances urging people to buy these kids’ school supplies.

When I was a kid in elementary school-—in the ‘70s-—there was one small table of maybe six kids, in the whole school, who got free breakfast. And they all managed to bring their own supplies.

“I thought you were going to paint all public school employees as lazy good-for-nothings with that broad brush”

Have you ever been to a Prince Georges County workplace?

You should learn a little before you start feeling sorry for these poor employees.

Your latter comment implied you were referring to all public school employees.

How did we all survive in the old days, before school lunches were provided, before food stamps, before the whole Great Society anti poverty thing???

Couple of ‘glaring’ idiotic statements.
Danger of obesity while not in school.
The meals will be provided until Aug 1.

Now isn’t (at least it was) the summertime that us kids used to spend most every waking hour OUTSIDE amusing ourselves and playing ball till we got tired?
MAYBE get ‘forced’ to eat when called in just before dark.
That life style was surely a cure for obesity - especially in the day before couch potatoes were ‘invented’ and there wasn’t not only a TV in every room, there definitely was nothing more to stay inside for....HELL, your mother may put you to (more) work were you to stay inside and get under her ‘feet’.

Also, since school starts Sept 1, what are they supposed to do for the month of Aug?

Guess they have to stop the handouts because the distributors of the handouts need a paid vacation??

Even in Culpeper VA, I go by a ‘crew’ in a car with ‘shade umbrellas’ set up with a sign stating “Free Food” with some more on the sign... Even though I go through this ‘makeshift distribution center’ twice a week I normally don’t feel it wise to ‘STOP’ long enough to read what the sign says...And that is at 10AM.. It is on the lawn by the street, outside an ‘apartment complex’ and surrounded by single family homes.
The entire neighborhood is well kept even though the ‘complexion’ is dark and darker - what I mean is - I wouldn’t have a whole lot of trouble etc driving through there at night — IF I absolutely had to.
Not ‘afraid’ etc just concerned if anyone were to ask what I am doing may escalate to me having to .....etc....etc...

Said she buys as much as she can of these staples on her LoneStar card the first of every month and donates it all to our local VFW which provides free lunch to Veterans and their families.

If these are being purchased with SNAP benefits this is clearly illegal -- food stamp fraud. Not illegal if she is purchasing with TANF.

I believe the way the program works is that free breakfasts and lunches are provided to everyone under the age of 18.

Those are the federal rules but in this area you'll rarely see any kids over elementary age showing up for the free meals.

My mistake. In the Southwest the older schools have lots of operable windows because everything was evaporative cooling. The newer schools are the ones with few windows. I guess the East coasters have been building schools like prisons for some time now.

Well, I certainly will stop her and question her extensively if I ever see her doing such a dastardly deed again. /s/

Why does a child whose family gets food stamps....need free meals at school?

Is it too much to ask they get off the sofa and use some of that free food to make their kid a PB&J sandwich?

When I was a kid, going to summer school was a mark of shame. It meant you had failed the previous term. Wonder if these breakfasts and lunches are bookending the summer school fail camp?

Back in the 1970s, when this school was opened, Beltsville was a nice, suburban area. The flight from PG County hadn't yet started.

I thought Beltsville is in PG Canny... has it been redistricted?

In the 50s, PG was the Howard Canny of Maryland -- it had the best schools in the state up until the late 60s or so. A friend of mine went to his 50th high school reunion from what was then a top PG public school. Guys -- and women -- in his class from the early 60s are doctors, lawyers, publishers, physicists, miltary officers, teach at Harvard, MIT, etc. He said that when the alumni went on their 50th Alumni Weekend tour of the school, it was entirely black and hispanic, and in the previous year (2012? 13?) that school had not graduated a single kid who would go on to college. The principal asked the old white alumni to take up a money collection for that public school.
