Goodbye caped crusader, hello prophet! We’ve got an exclusive poster reveal of Christian Bale playing Moses in director Ridley Scott’s upcoming Old Testament epic Exodus: Gods and Kings. Bale’s armored warrior get-up is a far cry from the iconic beard-and-robe look sported by cinema’s most famous Moses, Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments. But that’s by design: One of Bale’s conditions for taking the role, he told Entertainment Weekly, was “no fake beards.” “The biblical account of Moses is extraordinary, and there was lots of room for us to go to places that The Ten Commandments never dreamed of going,” the Oscar-winning actor told the magazine.
Scott’s all-star film tells the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, then under rule of the Pharaoh Ramses, who's played by an almost unrecognizable Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Warrior), shown above next to Bale and in the solo poster below. Ben Kingsley, Sigourney Weaver, John Turturro and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul are among the other actors who signed on to bring the ancient tale to life, shooting in the exotic locations of Almería, Spain, and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.
The director described the shoot as an intense experience — appropriate, given the source material. “What I thought I knew about Moses, I didn’t really,” Scott told EW. “Either I wasn’t paying attention in Sunday school or I had forgotten. I was knocked out by who he was and the basics of the story — it has to be one of the greatest adventures and spiritual experiences that could ever have been.”

The part of Exodus that almost no one has read, and I think would be amazing on film, is found in Exodus 24:9-11 :
Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of sapphire, clear as the sky itself. But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.
Imagine walking up a road made of sapphire to have a meal with God!
Christian Bale always struck me as a decent guy. I have not read about him mouthing off on political issues. He has been rumored to support the NRA. He supports democracy in China (remember — he got attacked by Chinese soldiers for visiting a dissident). And he visited the Aurora massacre site and spoke with victims and their families simply because the murderer was obsessed with the Batman movie Bale was in. We could do a lot worse than having Bale as Moses.
While true... do you think the 1950's "swords and sandals" biblical epics had any more realistic grungy style? (Other than the "wild-eyed because he's on a mission from God" Moses look....)
Hold it, maybe that speaks the missing element from this poster. Bale's character is looking back at Pharaoh, rather than being inspired by God. There's nothing emotionally inspiring about this picture.
Moses wasn’t inspired by God until he was 80. He lived his first 40 years in Egypt as a very wealthy and powerful man. Then he committed murder and fled into the wilderness where he married the daughter of a shepherd and took care of the flocks for another 40 years until he came upon a strange sight. When the voice of the Lord spoke to him from the middle of the burning bush, Moses became the inspired man.
Defending a fellow Jew against an unjust beating is not murder! What Moses did was just, considering the situation.
Not according to the laws of the day and how Moses himself recorded the event. Exodus 2:11-15. Moses knew what he did was wrong.
11 In the course of time Moses grew up. Then he went to see his own people and watched them suffering under forced labor. He saw a Hebrew, one of his own people, being beaten by an Egyptian. 12 He looked all around, and when he didn’t see anyone, he beat the Egyptian to death and hid the body in the sand.
13 When Moses went there the next day, he saw two Hebrew men fighting. He asked the one who started the fight, “Why are you beating another Hebrew?”
14 The man asked, “Who made you our ruler and judge? Are you going to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought that everyone knew what he had done.
15 When Pharaoh heard what Moses had done, he tried to have him killed. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian.
He wasn’t stopping the beating, he sought out the Egyptian and killed him after the fact. Moses knew what he did was wrong and fled when he was afraid he was discovered.
