People who enter the U.S. and nearby countries illegally from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras should not be forced to return home and should be treated as refugees, a U.N. agency says. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says people from those countries are subject to persecution.
From Geneva, Lisa Schlein reports for our Newscast unit:
"The United States isn't the only country being flooded by migrants from Central America. U.N. refugee spokesman Adrian Edwards says the number of people fleeing to Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica and other countries in search of asylum has increased by more than 700 percent since 2008.
" 'They are fleeing an environment of transnational organized crime and other problems there, and we believe that amongst that there are people who will be in need of international protection,' Edwards says.
"The refugee agency is particularly concerned about the large number of unaccompanied children arriving in the U.S. Washington estimates more than 90,000 unaccompanied children will arrive by the end of September."
reports that of the 52,000 unaccompanied children who have been taken into custody by U.S. border agents since October, about 75 percent are from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
"Even in a region accustomed to immigrant surges, no one has seen anything like this before," from the Rio Grande area of Texas last month.
As last week, the Obama administration has struggled to discourage would-be migrants from attempting to cross into the U.S. illegally. Carrie talked to several people in Guatemala who said that conditions in their country especially the economic prospects for its children were enough to make them move north.
The call from the U.N. echoes statements made in the spring, when the refugee agency released "," a report that cited interviews with migrant childre

I think we should treat the UN as INVADERS.
Good thing is, Blue helmets make good targets.
UN needs to mind their own business and also relocated to another country - Guatemala would be good....
Like the UN has even had a clue during entire time of its sorry existance.
Add up the IQ of the entire contingent there and one wouldn’t get past a decimal point.
Tell the Sudan to free Merriam first then maybe, just maybe we will spend a second thinking about it....
Why ???
an illegal alien is not a rose by any other name...
nor a refugee..
Refugees?? How about illegal foreign invaders ??
(I think the Constitution says something about protecting our sovereignty from illegal invasion) /s
I know. Do I know any other party jokes ??
Yes
Possibly the first time I agree with the UN.
This is an international refugee situation caused by CORRUPT FAILED STATES not taking care of their own citizens. These countries should be sanctioned and charged for the cost of housing and caring for the refugees until their home countries get their act together even if that takes decades.
Put them in refugee camps and treat them well (on their home country’s dime) until this issue is resolved.
Oh, the Useless Nitwits put their two cents in. Here’s an idea. If the Useless Nitwits are sooooo concerned, why don’t they draw up a list of member nations that are willing to take these “refugees”? We’ll send them right over.
The UN should be driven from New York into the sea at bayonet point, and the building razed to the ground. I think NOTHING good has ever come from that misbegotten and misguided organization.
Or Honduras, or El Salvador. I'd like to see videos of the staging areas. La Bestia might be crude, but its roof is loaded up like the second deck of a commuter train on the Long Island Rail Road. It's a planned factory of invaders, not a spontaneous movement.
And another thing... the reputed coyote fee for transport was $10K per head. That's bullcrap. These people don't have $10k per head to spare. Hell, even in the US, not many retiring people can put 10K per head together after working and paying taxes all their lives. If these people have that money, then the streets of Central America are paved with gold.
Or use the UN building as an encampment for the ‘refugees!’ Make them give up their cushy office space!
When can we treat the UN as the terrorist organization that it is?
I urge the UN to cross the border.
Someone needs to nuke that pustule of corruption in New York city.
If that the case, then why isn’t the UN going after those countries for human rights violations?
FOF CRYIN” OUT F**KING LOUD FIX YOUR COUNTRIES INSTEAD OF RUNNING AWAY FROM THEM, DAMN IT!!!!(sorry for shouting so profanely but like all of you I’ve had enough for this bs)
A great idea! 39 stories in the “Secretariat Tower”. Plus lots of seating in the General Assembly. It will be the ultimate celebration of diversity!
FTUN
Guess who created that environment? Themselves. They are fleeing themselves and as the old saying goes, where ever you go there you are. They are just going to recreate that environment here.
