Primary battles in Tennessee tend to be very heated affairs. This is not entirely due to the fact that Tennessee holds its primaries in the first week of August as the temperature and humidity sail north of 90 degrees in many parts of the state.
While Tennessees primary is late compared to many others, what is really surprising is that no one is talking about the Senate primary.
Lamar Alexander is running for his third term as senator from Tennessee. Alexander is almost a political legend in Tennessee. He was twice elected governor. He ran for president twice. He was George H.W. Bushs secretary of education.
Alexander has amazing, if not almost universal, name recognition throughout Tennessee.
Yet he could be the senator the tea party knocks off this year.
Earlier this week, Tea Party Nation and Triton polling conducted a survey of likely Republican voters in Tennessee. The results were stunning.
Among 1,100 likely Republican voters sampled, Lamar Alexander leads tea party challenger Joe Carr, 44 percent to 20 percent.
The immediate reaction of a lot of people to the poll is that Alexander is beating Carr by more than 2-to-1.
Thats not the important number to look at.
Lamar Alexander is the best-known Tennessee politician since Howard Baker. He is certainly the most well-known Tennessee politician of the last quarter century.
He is a Republican institution and he is polling at less than 50 percent.

This article may have already been posted awhile back but it fits.
Carr is a patriot. I think I saw him in a 2nd Amendment documentary a while back. The guy is solid. I really hope he wins, and I think he’d have had a much better shot had the McDaniel/Brat momentum not stopped dead because of a despicable fraud campaign by the establishment in Mississippi.
Alexander is 50% more lucid than Cochran, so he’ll be tough to beat.
“Lamar Alexander is the best-known Tennessee politician since Howard Baker.”
The two of them were part of the wave in the 60s and 70s that washed out a VERY corrupt Democrat Party in this state. Well, at least for the most part. Their contributions were very important. And, it’s beyond time to move on. Tennessee can do better than Alexander, and a lot better than Corker. Lamar should have ridden off into the sunset, or put on his flannel shirt, and walked off into the sunset. Come on along ....
“had the McDaniel/Brat momentum not stopped dead because of a despicable fraud campaign by the establishment in Mississippi.”
Which is exactly why it was done, to protect their precious US Senate, so they ratify treaties to enslave us and confirm judges and executive officials who will erase our liberties.
People in TN will never, ever reject Lamar! It’s not in their DNA to do so.
You might be surprised what people will do when their country is under seige.
Lamar will never get this Tennessean’s vote again.
I’m visiting my Mom in Tennessee. When she saw Huckabee doing his tough guy endorsement of Lamar, my 93 years young Mom said, “Son, find out who’s running against Lamar so I can vote for him in the primary”.
Mitch McConnell has endorsed Lamar. My wife who is from Louisville says that’s all she needs to know about Lamar.
As for me, Lamar’s been a phony since 1992 when he turned out in his lumberjack shirt chopping wood.
There’s some real Tea Party rumbling out there. But so far, McConnell & Flimsey Graham are thumbing their noses at us and Lamar could make that a threesome.
Count on Alexander to win. The GOPe machine is backing him.
You left off the exclamation mark. It’s Lamar!, and TN people know the name. That’s what counts with the uninformed.
I wish TN would reject Lamar!, but they also were heavily enthusiastic about his mentor, the late Senator Baker, who practically gave up his seat so Al Gore could take it.
There’s not much I can do about the uninformed these days, so I will vote for Carr against Lamar. That is a simple FACT...and an exclamation point is unnecessary at this juncture.
Lamar! was smart years ago to come up with this exclamation mark. People in TN can remember that and keep him in office.
Who ripped off who? Hillary! or Lamar!
