Hagel: ISIS poses an 'imminent' threat to US

By Kristina Wong - 07/09/14 04:15 PM EDT

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday the Sunni fundamentalist group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) poses a threat not just to the government in Baghdad, but to the United States as well.

"This country should not make any mistake on this, nor anyone in Congress — this is a threat to our country," Hagel said while meeting with troops at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia.

"This is a force that is sophisticated. It's dynamic, it's strong, it's organized, it's well-financed, it's competent, [ISIS]. And it is a threat to our allies all over the Middle East. It's a threat to Europe. It's a threat to every stabilized country on Earth, and it's a threat to us," Hagel said.

He added that the Pentagon was getting daily assessments from troops deployed on the ground in Iraq, and the "finality of those assessments will be completed in the next few days." The administration has said that assessment would form the basis of next steps for the U.S. in Iraq, which is battling a terrorist takeover by ISIS.

"We'll have a further context of what recommendations they'll make. In the meantime, we're doing everything we can, as I said in those two general areas, protect our people and assist [Iraqi Security Forces] in their efforts to defeat [ISIS]," Hagel said.

In response to a threat to Baghdad, President Obama has ordered about 650 U.S. troops to Iraq, in addition to the 100 already there.

Those troops are helping to reinforce the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and other diplomatic facilities, as well as to conduct assessments on the security situation, which includes the flying of armed and unarmed drones.

"We are assisting in every way we can to help the Iraqi people defeat the brutal fundamentalists," Hagel said.

"[ISIS] may not appear to be an imminent threat to the United States. It is a threat to the United States. It is a threat, clear threat to our partners in that area, and it is imminent," he said.

This is a very significant thing for the Secdef to say. It looks like some sort of administration test to see if a hostile response comes from Congress. If it does, the Prez wasn't involved, it was just a cabinet officer overstepping. If not it is the first straw in the wind that something more than half assed NEO Ops planning and some SOF being deployed may be required. This is interesting. The phrase 'imminent threat' normally is the step before a warning order for launching an operation.

Obama can’t be bothered. He has the agents stationed 45 miles NORTH of the border.

If they come here and start chopping our heads off I would hope that Hussein would maybe do something for once. If they come thru the border it lays squarely on Hussein’s shoulders and the democrats in congress who want open borders, that goes for the RINOS to—heck, it’s all of Congress’s fault.

Thanks for posting this. I’d not seen it elsewhere, and it should have gotten more coverage.

LOL. Your boss, and you, too, Chuckles.

Hey, didn’t some of us try to warn your boss and you about cutting and running from Iraq?

Yep.

Hagel created and trained ISIS at Obama’s orders, so he must know what their mission is, right?

ISIS has now declared itself to be The Islamic Caliphate.

That is, in their minds, a global government.

‘The rat bastards brought us to this point, now they want us to be frightened’

This statement is a lot more than just propaganda. The words the SecDef used have a specific meaning within the defense establishment. They are the equivalent of the phrase ‘intolerable provocation’ in diplomatic parlance. Normally such a remark would be a clear signal to all the services to begin operation execution planning immediately. Only the phrase ‘war warning’ or ‘operational execution alert’ are closer to directing the armed services to be ready to go into combat operations immediately upon command.

The border patrol has agents/vehicles stationed in Louisiana. Travel time from the closest border crossing is about 14 hours. No foolin. I have seen border patrol in Baton Rouge. Sitting there. Watching. Our tax dollars at not work.

Maybe he’d sharpen the sword?

‘Good point, but who will be military be directed against?’

IMHO this is a straw in the wind to start the clock running on a really big Noncombatant Evacuation Operation (NEO) which can be embedded in some sort of an expedited material support operation for the Iraqi government if ISIS appears to be successfully isolating Baghdad or about to penetrate the security screen around Baghdad. The number of Americans in Iraq with the US government, USG contractors, Non Government Organizations and International organizations as well as other westerners attached to the last two number in the thousands. If the core around Baghdad appears to be crumbling then you can imagine what would be the fate of these people and it would be broadcast live on TV. So there is both a component of national interest in pushing hardware into Iraq to bolster what is still seen as a US proxy state and in protecting the physical safety of as many foreign nationals trapped in country as possible and one of political calculation. The Mahdi and his handlers do not want the sequel to the fall of Khartoum broadcast ‘Live at 6’ on CBS.

Hey, Chuck. I've got a great idea on how to counter this dire threat...

Let's pink slip our returning combat veterans and use the money to hire lawyers for the "children" coming across our almost completely unguarded southern border. Then we'll release these illegal aliens - whom we don't know and really don't have a clue about who they are or where they will end up - all over the country in the hopes they'll someday show up again.

Oh, wait. The Administration you are a part of is already doing that. Never mind.

I’m convinced nuclear weapons will be used again in the near future thanks to Obama.
