'Iron Dome' anti-rocket system is changing the face of battle by limiting Israeli casualties
Fox News / The Associated Press ^ | July 10, 2014

Israel's "Iron Dome" defense system has emerged as a game-changer in the current round of violence with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, shooting down dozens of incoming rockets and being credited with preventing numerous civilian casualties.

By shooting down more than 90 percent of its targets, the system is ensuring Israel's decisive technological edge that has helped it operate virtually unhindered in Gaza.

At the same time, it's also providing a much-needed sense of security on the home front.....

Reagan’s efforts have saved millions of lives. I believe millions of civilians would have died in conflicts without smart bombs and missile defense.

Tom Toles has been proven wrong and he’s still as dumb as a box of rocks.

But missile defence won’t work. At least that was what all the leftists were saying in the 1980s and 1990s.

Reagan had a strong dislike for nuclear weapons and thought Mutually Assured Destruction was a terrible policy. That was his motivation for missile defense. I only learned this by reading his autobiography. There was so much disinformation about Reagan, even I believed it for most of my life.

Yeah, I do recall that. However, of course, all that leftist claptrap about the infeasibility about missile defense has since been flushed down the memory hole,

I don't think it was just leftists. The GOPe hated Reagan, and plenty of people were making a fortune off of Big Government and the Cold War.

The problem South Korea has is that North Korea has so many tubes and rails pointed at Seoul that they could overwhelm any reasonable system.

Although I'm not from Missouri, I sure would like to see all these downed missles. One would think there would be some photos of semi intact missiles laying about which weren't necessarily destroyed by Iron Dome, but lost guidance.

“”If we keep up what we are doing, there is a good chance that we will be able to lower the ratio to one death for every 10,000 rockets fired,” he said.”

NOT ACCEPTABLE. If one person is killed, then the system is a TOTAL FAILURE, so it is a waste of money to build and operate it.

The above is the rationale that some people ON THIS SITE use to argue against building a border fence - since the fence can be breached, why build it?

“What is needed is something that will turn the rockets back on their launchers. Then when Gaza is wiped out it will be of their own doing and have nothing to do with Israel.”

That would be a laser system that hits the rockets as they climb out. No doubt that Israel has put some thought into that too.

They were actually working on one with the US, US led project. The US cancelled the program. Twice.

Yep, sounds like US policy. Unreal. I hope Israel finishes the jobs - they have a lot of incentive. If the rockets come straight down on the terrorists and the their human shields, they will have a tougher time finding popular support.

So, who has more rockets? Who has deeper pockets?

Israel or Iran?

Exactly. Liberals have been scoffing at anti-missle defense since the early days of the Reagan presidency.

So how can it possibly work?

That would mean that liberals are wrong about something.

Oh, wait, I just remembered... LIBERALS ARE WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING.

None of the Pali/Hamas rockets are guided. They’re all ballistic types, flying a straight predictable path. Aside from locally produced rockets, ex-Soviet-design BM-21 Grad rockets are now popular, along with old Katushya rockets. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BM-21_Grad Grads are cheaply made flimsy things and have a nasty tendency to explode when they hit or are hit by anything, so there’s not going to be a lot of debris. Some has been found and videoed.

The contractor who was working on it the first two times is offering to finish it for the Israelis. The Israelis are understandably not terribly interested in dumping money into this only to have the Obama Administration yank the football away again.

I hear you. That bites. As good as Iron Dome is, having it as a back-up to a laser system that hits the missiles just as they leave the ground would bring up the overall kill rate by an order of magnitude.

Israel missed a great opportunity when it was occupying the Sinai — should have covered the entire east shore of the Gulf of Suez with housing with a great view (and water supply) and offered them at very modest cost to the Arabs of Gaza, Judah, and Samaria, and “refugees” living in neighboring countries. They’d be rid of them now, and they’d be far enough away to never pose a thraat. Plus, the Egyptians would either assimilate them (without asking permission) or take world opprobrium by evicting them.

great idea , except at the time the Egyptian Army was shelling the crap out of the east bank of the Suez and at other times , England and France were halting in their agreed support and the Soviet and the US combined in the UN to cause them to stand down .

That said ....it’s NOT too late : Retake the entire Sinai
It should be part of greater Israel anyway .

I’d say it’s time for God to move , and not necessarily in the ways that fundamentalist Christians believe He should/will , according to Revelation , Daniel , 1st Cor , etc . Time for the God of Abraham , Isaac and Jacob to demonstrably move in such a way , against the enemies of Israel and the killers of Jews , so that no human being anywhere can have any doubt whose side GOD is on and what a complete sick fantasy the apostasy of islam is and what true infidels the muslims are .

God please move Thy mighty Hand
